Hello Anders, is beautifull sculpting and very cool paint. Ecxellent Work. Alexandros

Thank you one and all for taking the time to post your over whelming comments!!

I am happy that it is so well received and hope it will do well for the APG, it is a great cause, and one we all should support in any way we can.

As for the purple putty, it is just Magic Sculpt with some Vallejo Violet mixed in with it. WhenI mixed the putty I happened to have the the bottle of paint right there...and what you see is the result. It was actually quite nice to work with so might have to do that again, besides, it looks good with the natural gray of the putty :)

As for pupils, I never paint pupils on a 54mm figure. I have done it once on a 35th scale figure to see if I could do it, and though they were perfect in size and shape it just did not look right in that scale, as such I never did it again, nor will I. Pupils are better suited for larger scales.

As for the reason of no buttons, that is because the print the piece was based on did not have any buttons showing. I did not know about the buttons ont he cuffs or would have added them, did not see them in any of the reference used, which was several coats in the Echoes of Glory series of books "Arms and Equipment of the Union", as well as some Troiani prints etc. I'd love to see some pctures of original jackets with the cuff buttons! So if anyone have any please feel free to post on this thread.

Thanks again guys for taking the time to post your thoughts.

That's fine with me Anders :) I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't been brave enough to take such close up shots. :D

Anders - I also like this piece. Pose and the painting looks great to me. I also dont add pupils to my 54mm. I dont think the naked eye can see it and/or makes a difference in effect to the naked eye. But I will try to add a catchlight instead. It seems to fool the eye that there is a pupil there.

There are some good reference sources out there with either photographs of original frocks or period photographs showing them being worn. The Time-Life Echoes of Glory series is a handy reference with color pictures of original uniforms, weapons, and equipment. There are at least three examples of enlisted frocks where the cuff buttons are visible. Here are two more books I would suggest.

The Civil War Reenactor's Encyclopedia by William c. Davis The bulk of the book is devoted to color photographs of orignal uniforms, weapons, and equipment. A number of these items are in Echoes of Glory, but there is a difference. In this book a lot of the uniforms are shown with front and back views which is a rare to see. In some cases the photos look a little on the light side, so cross reference where possible for color. The section on reenacting is pretty poor in regards to images. They tend to show your "mainstream" Civil War reenactor types which make for a poor reference if you like to use photos of reenactors. There are also some color plates which have some errors in them so do a little cross referencing with these also. Here is a photo of a part of the cover. Also is a front and back view of one of the frocks shown in the book.

The Columbia Rifles Research Compendium This book was written by the Columbia Rifles and published by Watchdog Quarterly in 2006. The book is a series of articles written by members of the Columbia Rifles which does one of the best impressions of your typical Federal soldier. Though geared towards reenactors/ living historians the material in this book is top shelf and concentrates on uniforms, weapons, equipment. There is also information on how equipment was maintained, period hairstyles etc. The downside is the book was released in limited numbers and is hard to find. You might be able to find a copy on one of the message boards that cater to Civil War Reenactors/ Living historians. If you should find one the 400+ page volume will be well worth the price. The photo shows a drawing of Federal frock coat cuff variants.

Thanks guys!

Thanks Gary!! I didnt know there was buttons there, though the blue piping did leave me wondering. I did not see it in the Echoes of Glory book either! I'll get it figured out for the next one! Thanks for the images!

No problem. Sometimes the angle of a sleeve can conceal buttons, additional piping what have you. According to several letters by members of the 154th NY (Humiston's unit) the men were mostly clothed in blouses (sack coat) along with some in New York state "shell" jackets worn with light blue kersey trousers. ~Gary

Hello Anders!
You create something amazing and sculpting is wonderful but the painting is wonderful.
Is a person who turns in time.
Excellent.

Aaaah Ciao Luca! Nice picture! Yes, remember that evening very well, good food (while going down...not so much coming back up!!) and great company!! Your chef knowledge added a bit extra to the dinner. Hope we can do it again sometime!!

Thanks Mike :)

Thanks Tony, it is a great cause and am happy to support it in any way that I can.

The figure was shipped today as I will not be able to make the show due to work commitments. Hopefully by 10:30 AM tomorrow, Mike Stelzel will give me a buzz telling me the figure has arrived in one piece. Until then, I am a bit anxious!!
