That is to say horses from the ancient and medieval periods rather than 'old' horses :)

There are some lovely mounted figures out there, but almost universally they are mounted on 'modern' horses. Since I'm increasingly interested in ancients and dark age figures I'm looking for a source or two of smaller horses/ponies.
Using horse bit size found at archaeological sites the sizes of horses was smaller than you would expect, typically just over 14 hands for the Norman knights of 1066 and perhaps smaller still for ancient Britons warriors. Obviously some horses were bred to be larger, but other characteristics such as agility and temperament were more important in battle. (Before the stirrup getting on board a big horse is a bit of a struggle)

Anyway enough preamble, who makes 54 mm horses that are smaller?
Historex are beautiful, but slim (I always used to add a bit of the mounted base to thicken the girth up on mine) Airfix collectors are lovely great things suited to a period when stirrups were more widely used. Metal models likewise are beauties, but bigger than I'm after.

Cheers

This is trully a problem. To my knowledge no company produces specific horse breeds, they all work with a "generic" horse. The only notable exception is Chronos Miniatures' latest release of an Akhal Teke,an Orel and an Anglo-arab for the Russian market. As for smaller size horses (you are quite right about the size of ancient horses too) speaking for myself when I wanted two of them for a scratch built Mycenaean chariot I was working on some time ago,I played doctor Mengele on two historex ones (I literally had them drawn and quartered, shortened and fattened,jaw-ampified etc in order to get that przewalski or tarpan "feel".Was less lucky on the looks but at least I gave it a go:D).

Oda.

I had the same problem with Keith Durham's mounted Border Reiver. The mount should be a Border Pony, but this was a"large" 80mm Horse, so I used a John Tassel 70mm Horse, to get the desired effect. If you're modelling in scales above 54mm this could be a solution. Ray
