I did a lot of modelling as a child in the 1970's, but really only sporadically since then. I made my 1st white metal figure in 2000 and then fatherhood and work got in the way again. Then, this year, I received a couple of Andrea 54mm figures for my birthday and really enjoyed working on them. They were both crusaders and for my next project I fancied a go at a napoleonic subject. Looking on the Andrea website the 90mm chasseur really took my fancy, and whilst I thought it was probably rather ambitious for me, I decided to have a go anyway. It is my first napoleonic figure for over 30 years, and my first serious attempt at a horse. It's a steep learning curve for me, and of course in retrospect I would have done things slightly differently, but so far there have been no disasters. I've nearly finished the horse now, and have added more dapples etc. I will have to take more photos.

Any comments would be welcome as this is relatively unknown territory for me!

Thanks Rocky, yes nearly all acrylics - Model Color & Andrea primarily. I prefer to use enamels for the metallic colours though. When I did my first white metal kit 7 years ago, I wanted to try something other than enamels so I went out and got a set of oils but got frustrated with the drying times. Once I discovered acrylics there was no way back for me. Of course there are drawbacks, and I still have those oil paints...

I liked the figure a lot when I saw it standing in a magazine, maybe I will buy it in the future also.
The painting of the horse is really great. I have a horse standing on my work bench and still struggling to put the right colors.
The painting of the fur is also very good and a lot of work, well done!
I would like to see the progress on the figure!

Mike, looking really good so far considering your tenure. The leopard skin looks particularly nice. Dont be afraid to push your shadows just a tad more on the horse. Excellent start, keep us posted. Ambitious indeed!

Thanks for all the encouragement, it means a lot. I had thought I'd be working on the rider by now, but I can't seem to leave the horse alone. Jay, you're right, the horse had been lacking some shadow definition, and the dapples weren't defined as much as I'd liked, so I've worked on those. The mane is now completed and attached, the tail is completed but I'll glue that on later. I've also attached the resin base to it's wooden base for ease of handling. I'm currently working on the hooves - I haven't quite got those looking as I'd like yet. I've just taken some photos and they look pretty poor, I'll try again tomorrow. I've attached one to give an idea, but the detail is lost.

Cheers, Mike
