I'm definately going to pick up the Normans at Hastings. Especially since this figure is depicting Bishop Odo. A big personality at Hastings (William's half brother)who was also appointed regent afterwards when William was out of town. He is actually called out on the Bayeux Tapestry. Its the fact that he does carry the club that makes him such a stand out figure in the tapestry. Its uniqueness really is a nice choice from the usual long axe, sword or spear we usually see.
The club is an end run around the edict of the council of Rheims, (1049) prohibiting the bearing of arms by the clergy; spilling blood via sword, a sin. Pulping Saxon Skulls with a papal bull of invasion, ok and priceless in the eyes of God and the Pope..... ;) but the war-club was a not unusual weapon at that period. William is also depicted with a club on the tapestry.
