Hi guys,

I am completely new to figures miniatures building and painting. This is my first figure ever. I am showing it because I would like to learn from you guys.

I would like to hear your opinions and waiting for advices.

Everything was primed with Mr.Surfacer 1200 (airbrush). Than face was covered (airbrush) with a flesh mix from Model Master acryl series. Finally I used W&N oils for shadows and highlights.
I have tried to simulate warm black on the beard ( Model Master acryl for mixing base , shadows and highlights). I quess it did not work well. It looks for me a little bit pink in highlights :)

If this is your first figure, then I can only commend you. Looks as though you have a good understanding of shadowing and blending oils. The eyes look good and in proportion. Maybe the only thing it needs is a little pink on the lips. Very well done

Hi Piotr,

Firstly, welcome to Planet Figure and welcome to the wonderful world of figure modeling.

As this is your first effort at painting a figure you can expect lots of encouragement and not much criticism from me. You've made an excellent start and I can't wait to see how you progress.

Welcome to the Planet.
Your sure that this is your first figure???
What i can see from these little pic's is that you really know what shading and highlighting is.
Great start.

Marc

For a first time figure, thats some excellent work and l look forward to seeing the rest of the figure once complete.
Ohh by the way, welcome to the Planet,a great bunch of people who will only encourage you more as you go.

Thank you all for your kind welcome. It is good to hear you like my effort. I will be posting more pictures as soon as I do any progress.

Slow progress...

I am posting only one picture showing head ready.
I think now the hardest part will begin.

Welcome back. I am posting a small progress.

Obviously you will notice that the head has been changed. Unfortunately because of my stupidity I destroyed already painted face. I am lucky the kit included two heads.

After that "accident" I took a break. I was going to quit with that figure. Later I started with the base which is a complete scratch-build. I liked the way how it turned out, so I decided to continue with the figure.

It is ready for painting now. I hope, I will put some paint on it tomorrow.
There are some pictures with the Mr. Surfacer as a primer which is not the best choice for white metal.

I am back again with some update. I painted chain mail and helmet. Would appreciate any comments and critics.

Than I put a base-coat on the cloak.I found some difficulties during that stage. Especially when using Vallejo Model Color paints. I need you guys to help me find some answers. I will start from the begin.

I bought couple bottles of Vallejo. They came very thick. There is no way to shake them well. I ques they are old, but I do not know if that affects their properties.
I used the flat yellow and sunny skin ton mix for the coat (2:4), thinned with mix of the distilled water and 70% ISA (4:1). The coverage of the paint was very poor (tried couple dilution ratios), I had to put many, many layers to achieve effect on the picture. Still have to work on it, if you take a closer look you will find spots when undercoat is still visible and the surface has a satin finish. :(

Is it because paint is too old or I am doing something wrong?

Hey good job here

Well seems to me that this is not bad.

For the chainmail and the helmet, you can use a wash. Just dilute some black and dark sienna (oil paint) and paint it over the metallic. Make sure the the wash goes everywhere. Then Highlight with silver mitril from Games workshop.

For vallejo bottle, you can take the top off and put some BB gun pellets (or small ball bering) and when you gonna shake the bottle, that's is gonna help a bit. Some of my bottles have thick paint. But when I use the water to dilute the paint, it is ok.

For me, Yellow is a difficult color to work with. Poor coverage. That's probably why you had problems with the coverage. If I work with yellow, I always use a white primer as a base. Then go with the yellow to get a good coverage. The white will also keep your yellow very bright. Be patient with yellow. You have to built up the color. As for shadows and highlight, different colors can be used. Red, brown, violet, are good for shadows and Ivory for the highlight.

I also like yellow from Games workshop. Good coverage.

You can also use a darker yellow to make your basic coverage and then just use some bright yellow and ivory to get the highlight. Daker yellow (like snakebite leahter) is good to start with and you get a better coverage.

Hope this will help

Keep up the good job.
