Steven, it is obvious that is all a matter of personal taste, and about the conformity to the original paint, I do not think a sculptor must act like a xerox machine.
I think that art consist in expressing his own vision in a decent way, making an exact copy of something does not requires art nor talent, just technique.
Sculpting a right fold does nor requires talent, just practice, sculpting a wrong fold which seems more real than the real one requires to be a true artist.
The piece by Ray draws a perfect circle, where all the elements of the figure/horse contributes to the global armony, the one from Andrea no. Its circle it is smaller, breaked by various items, like the sleeve, the sword, etc. and do not tell me that it depends from the angle of the picture.
With the Lamb's rendition the figure and the horse are perfectly balanced, with the one of Andrea the figure seems to drown into the horse.
The pose of the Andrea's horse is not so good, an horse with such an opening of back legs will fall to the ground in one second, but in spite of this the figure seems so relaxed, going to take his cup of tea.
Lamb's figure stands so vertical because his point of support is the stirrup, creating a triangle into the external circle, the one from Andrea just creates an U turn.
I think one can follow more and more, as well for the ones who prefers the Andrea's rendition. It is a very good figure, but I simply prefer the original from Ray Lamb, that is what I meant.
