Hi Guys
The 90mm hussar is the classic based on the painting by Gericult and looks absolutely superb I think that this will prove a classic and in 90mm too
I think I have died and gone to heaven!
It must be on my christmas list and if I dont get it Santa and the reindeer are dog meat pal!! LOL
Cheers
John

Wow!! That 90mm piece is outstanding - even has the whiskers on the cheetah just behind the saddle. Nice.

Im my humble opinion the one sculpted way ago by Ray Lamb (?) and released by Historex is always the better.

Yes Calvin, Ray Lambs version is a classic but I personaly have always had a problem with two points.

1) The Cheetah hide saddle cloth is way to short at the rear, in the painting by Gericault this distance to the tail is much shorter.

2) The rider is positioned too vertical from the waist up, when in reality he would be leaning back slightly, with the horse all but rearing up!!

I know the original painting and to some extent the sculpted models are artistic impressions. So are we looking at models of a particular painting? or models of a particular cavalry officer?

Another point which concerns the Andrea figure, the chin straps holding the colpack look far to slack, for the movement of the horse and rider the headress would surely be lopsided.

These are points which I have to stress are purely personal on my part and if I had to choose a version it would be one modelled by Robert Baxter using converted 90mm Poste Militaire parts. I'm afraid I dont have a picture of it to hand, although I do remember it appearing in a copy of one of Military Modellings Euro specials.

Great new releases from Andrea. The Warlord is an exceptional figure and the Cesar is a hoot. As for the Chasseur, I would not want to even see the pricetag for that monster.~Gary

Steven, it is obvious that is all a matter of personal taste, and about the conformity to the original paint, I do not think a sculptor must act like a xerox machine.
I think that art consist in expressing his own vision in a decent way, making an exact copy of something does not requires art nor talent, just technique.
Sculpting a right fold does nor requires talent, just practice, sculpting a wrong fold which seems more real than the real one requires to be a true artist.

The piece by Ray draws a perfect circle, where all the elements of the figure/horse contributes to the global armony, the one from Andrea no. Its circle it is smaller, breaked by various items, like the sleeve, the sword, etc. and do not tell me that it depends from the angle of the picture.

With the Lamb's rendition the figure and the horse are perfectly balanced, with the one of Andrea the figure seems to drown into the horse.

The pose of the Andrea's horse is not so good, an horse with such an opening of back legs will fall to the ground in one second, but in spite of this the figure seems so relaxed, going to take his cup of tea.
Lamb's figure stands so vertical because his point of support is the stirrup, creating a triangle into the external circle, the one from Andrea just creates an U turn.

I think one can follow more and more, as well for the ones who prefers the Andrea's rendition. It is a very good figure, but I simply prefer the original from Ray Lamb, that is what I meant.

By the way, mount the picture of the Lamb's rendition with the same background used by Andrea and you will notice how such a scenic effect will contribute to the charm of the piece.

As always Calvin well explained, thank you.

As I said these are just personal views on my part, I have the utmost respect for Ray Lamb and yourself in these regards.

I understand your meaning of exact copying, if that was the case the hobby would be extremely boring. Thank you for the explanation about circle composition, unlike you I am not talented at sculpting and do respect your point of view on this subject.

Cheers Steve Walks :)

The placement of horses right hind leg and hoof in relationship to the ground looks extremelly odd to me. Probably necessary for the steel support rods it ( hopefully ) has.

It also looks like the picture is retouched, or is perhaps completely an artist rendition of the figure, witness the brown smoke almost covering the front legd/hoofs.

In any case, Kudos to Andrea for taking the risk of producing such a large piece.

BTW : Isn`t that an Historix coversion by Lamb ? when he was still working with those prior to starting Poste Militaire ??

Yes I think you are right Richard, it was made up of Historex parts but not actualy produced in that form by Historex. Ray Lamb did the major conversion work as a one of piece.

Yep. And still an excellent example by today's standards IMO. This is the figure that almost singlehandedly got me interesting in figure modelling actually.

I think that it is a fantastic piece I just hope to be able to afford it. Wife will be screaming if it is to much. It will be a excellent companion piece to the barton 90mm Chassuers flag bearer on horse I am currently redoing.

I have to agree on Andrea's hitting a homerun this month. These are, in my opinion as well, some of their finest releases in some time. The Chasseur Officer will without a doubt, one day be collecting dust with the rest of my figures! This is probably one of the highest forms of flattery in our hobby. Ray Lamb's classic conversion turned into a 90mm piece. What about the price? Kaaaa-ching. I think some of the things we are talking about (as far as sculpting or anatomy) were conscious decisions made by Andrea as they chose to stay closer to the original. This is OK with me as I think this is one heck of a figure and one we will see on the tables for some time to come.

Did a little research on the question of cost. Andrea is offering the figure at a cost of 142.24 euro. At current exchange rates of .18% markup the US dollar cost would be $167.64. Add shipping and handling plus a base recommended (ie 45mm x 45mm) and price is about $185.00. (24) seperate Andrea colors are recommended which would be additional.
Good thing X-Mas is right around the corner.
