Hi all on PF,

Do any members live in or near the town of Arnhem in Nederland/Holland?

I'm currently sculpting some 1/16th figures from a famous photograph taken during the battle for Arnhem bridge in 1944. I would like to create the building seen behind the figures, and also the garden ornamental iron railings. I hope to do this by designing the fascade in a vector graphics program, and then having it laser cut to reproduce accurately the very neat and thin 'Dutch' brickwork, and have the gateposts made on a 3D printer.

Using Google Maps and Streetview I've got a lot of information to begin drawing, but it would be amazingly helpful to have a few exact key measurments from the house in Boulevard Heuvelink.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Jon.

Hi Johan,

No it's not that one, just as well as that would be huge in 1/16th!

This is the one, numbers 70 and 72, on the corner of Johann de Wittlaan.

All the best,
Jon.

hi john, i live at 45 km from Arnhem. not a daily visit but sometimes my wife and I go shopping overthere. so maybe, if you are not in a hurry, I can make some pictures.

Yoshi, that would be brilliant!

The picture below shows the measurements that would really help me: 1/ the height and width of a single brick so that I can compare it with the chart Johan found (cheers Johan!), 2/the height of 5 courses of bricks under the window to help calculate the total height of the building, and 3/the width of a window sill to help calculate the total width of the building.

I hope the owners won't mind you doing this, you could try leaning over from the fence next door. If , as in the photo below, they have their blinds closed then they would not even notice at all!

I would like to create the building that is now the autobedrijf next door. Could it have looked the same as no.70 back in 1944? Seems unlikely as it would involve removing the basement and lowering the ground floor? If you do go to Arnhem could you pop in and ask the owner Barend Poleman if he has any photos of what the building once looked like? Acording to the website the business was established by his father Ferdie in 1965.

All the best and thanks,
Jon.

I thought I had identified the correct house in Boulevard Heuvelink, and had already made a start on the design. I hadn't used a vector graphics program before, and it took me a while to get used it, but once the penny dropped it was really magic and quite fun.

Whilst painting the box art I wondered why the balconies in the distance didn't match up with the ones seen in the distance on the wartime photo. And then, whilst on another little 'virtual' trip around the area I suddenly realised my mistake! Wrong house! Fortunately it happened at that early point, imagine how annoyed I would have been if I'd been further down the line with the computer design!

I learnt a lot from what little you see in the photo, and am confident that the next attempt with the correct building will go a lot better. As you can see it's all black lines at the moment, but at some point I would have had to change the lines to different colours to represent full cut and etch for the laser. I know the scale railway crowd are very familiar with using CAD in their hobby, but if there are any members on PF that have done this and can offer any advice to a novice please chip in.

Cheers,
Jon.

Before you all call me a lemon for getting the wrong house I will point out that the three roads that make up Boulevard Heuvelink are very similar in architecture and detailing, and I would guess built at the same time by the same architect. I've cropped parts from the original photos to show what can be seen of the houses in the 1944 photos, in the hope you can understand my schoolboy error! Notice the balconies look similar, but vary in heights! The correct view at number 68 -72 today is hidden by foliage.

Cheers,
Jon.

Here's the correct location. How I love Google Maps, one of the greatest and most versatile free access software tools accessible from your home computer!
