Hey guys!

Here is the new project I'm working on. This bust has been side eyeing me from my shelf for quite some time now, and I couldn't put him off any more. (I also like to alternate between doing a figure and then doing a bust and so on).

Just started him today, and currently doing some work on the face. I'm about 40% or so finished the major areas - still have a some smoothing out and contrast work to do, then I have the details to do (wrinkles, lip textures, goatee, eyebrows, etc...)

Hope you like him so far!

Hey guys - here is a quick update on the bust so far (after taking a week off)

All that's left is the outer cloak, and his belt which also contains his pistol and dagger. I'll probably have the entire thing finished (hopefully) next week.

Hope you like him so far!

Regards,
Phil

Phil you've done a sensational job on this one.The skin tones are beautiful and realistic and all the colors blend wonderfully to eachother.A beautiful piece of painting.

Thanks Oda. I did a lot of (failed) experimenting until I got the skin tones I wanted - I'm glad you like them!

Would you care sharing the colours and mixes you used? You've captured the "Arabian" skin tone quite effectivelly.

Oda.

Sure Oda - no problem... To start, as with the Chinese General, all colors used are Golden Acrylics.

For the base/mid-tones, I used a mix of Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, and Vat Orange. Burnt Umber was used in a much higher proportion than the rest. I laid them all out, and mixed very small parts of the Sienna, Ochre, and Orange into the Umber until I had what I liked.

For shadows, I mixed in more Burnt Umber, and then Dioxizine Purple into the base mix; the deeper the shadow, the more purple was added.

Highlights were a little messier to mix - I added in more Yellow Ochre and Vat Orange as needed. For the highest highlights, I also started mixing in Naples Yellow. (As a matter of fact, Naples Yellow was used in all the highlight mixes for all the colors used in all the parts of the bust so far; this helps harmonize all the colors together, and being a nice pale, desaturated yellow, it also helps convey that "dusty and been out in the desert sun for a while" look I'm trying to capture).

I hope this helps!
Phil
