I agree that this should be modelled as a reminder to current and future generations. This bust has been well executed, but I suspect there are better ways of so doing.

A historical remark:

This words "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" about the gate of the Concentration-Camp Auschwitz the first prisoners had to produce there themselves and mount.

In a secret act of the opposition they mounted the "B" wrong around, like it is to be seen until today...:

Former Auschwitz's prisoners report, it has concerned a secret protest of her coprisoner Jan Liwacz who had to explain several commissioned works for the SS as an art locksmith.

There were those words not only in Aschwitz, but also in the Concentration Camps Dachau (near Munich), Sachsenhausen (north of Berlin) and Neuengamme (near Hamburg).

What concerns the bust itself:
An interesting attempt to approach a very difficult subject.

What interferes me with the design a little bit is the very comic-like face and the bird on the shoulder.

I was talking to my mate Milmart about this today. We decided it reminded us of Louis Dega, played by Dustin Hoffman in the film Papillon.

I think it is very difficult to portray the horrific suffering of the Holocaust without the figure looking 'comic.' The painting is very well done; removing the bird on the shoulder I think would add to the power of the piece. A daring and commendable effort!
I must add that I am impressed by the graciousness displayed by the comments on this, even though it is a sensitive subject; everyone has responded with respect. There have been so many periods in history of cruelty and outright evil around the world; representing it in art serves to make sure we never forget.
Evil abounds when good men do nothing...
