Another possibility here that no one has mentioned is that maybe Latorre thought that what he sculpted was correct. Maybe he just relied on bad reference material or information.

Oh, yes, something of the sort was mentioned, in a posting by myself, yesterday, 02:35:
Speaking in general (i.e. not about this single example): although it could be that, in good faith, someone copies a single source he assumes as accurate, and subsequently that source is proved inaccurate, it is my conjecture this kind of errors is more likely to be the result of loose "research" and/or bad use of the information available. In fact both cases are related to inadequate management/understanding of sources and lack of familiarity with the subject.
We do not know what was the process for the creation of this figure, or any other, usually, BTW, and I assume it may be varied. A manufacturer may provide all of the info (good or bad) and not allow for any changes on the part of the sculptor; or may tell the sculptor to do "something" about a particular subject, and provide the sculptor with sources and trust he will use them to good effect; or, if the sculptor is assumed to be knowledgeable, let him do the research and selecting the subject to a certain extent: or... whatever. Also, the sculptor should be aware of his limitations and make these clear to his employer. Depending on the actual process, and the degree of familiarization with the subject of everyone involved, the accuracy of the final result may differ greatly (another thing altogether is what priority is allotted to accuracy issues).
Anyway, I would say the manufacturer has a greater share of responsibility on the final quality of the product.
