I guess its really a choice between changing the figure or the trench base when it comes down to it. Maybe a typical semi-permanent French gabion style trench to tie in with the early uniform?

There weren't really any trenches as such in the early war. There would have been simple scrapes (quickly excavated positions to provide a bit of shelter), and there was a lot of use of ditches and natural barriers, for example:

There's a nice photo on this website https://www.vox.com/2014/12/25/7448471/christmas-truce-1914 of a French officer in 1914 peering out of a muddy ditch. I think your figure would work well with that kind of groundwork.

But again, it's your figure, you do what you want ;)
