I’ve got to the point where I’m thinking of stopping but there are a couple of things I’m not quite happy with. I don’t want to run the risk of overdoing though, so I think I’ll put it to one side for a few days and look at it again with “fresh” eyes.
Gonna go back to my Australian Light Horse, which also need the finishing off treatment.

Your certainly doing the figures credit looking at the last picture , a good uniform colour and the figures work well together
Why not enter a piece into the class of your choice in our May's FOTM comp and also vote in Aprils classes as well
....And enter in Vignettes & Diorama #3 which will be running till 31/12/21 with voting till 31/01/22

I’ve got a few final little touches I want to add and there are a couple of things I’ve only just spotted in my photos that need attention, but I think I’m nearly there. I made the tin can out of some thin pliable metal sheet (not lead!) that I picked up at Euro Militaire a few years back. The lid started of as a circle which I roughed up a bit to look like it had been rather crudely opened. It’s meant to represent a large indistinguishable can of ‘Army meat’, similar to what today’s squaddies would recognise as the contents of a ‘Naffi growler’.
NAAFI growler (aka NAAFI pie)
: A staple snack for drunken squaddies. The ‘growler’ is a soggy, greasy pasty from a NAAFI vending machine or fast-food counter containing suspicious lumps of assorted colours and textures, ranging from nearly frozen chunks through to boiling hot soft bits, all wrapped in oily pastry. Usually served in a paper bag to ensure the greasiness is obvious to the consumer, who would otherwise think he had been sold a substandard growler ....Enjoy (lol)!
I know you said the ALH figure was special to you. I hope I can do him justice.

Competition entry....scary stuff!!! We’re hopefully in the process of moving over the next few weeks, so a bit stressed at the moment! (Lol). Plus a lot of my stuff is now being packed.
If I can get it finished in time to a reasonable standard I’ll give it a go and enter Mays FOTM. I’ll give you a shout if I can’t find entry / voting details.

Nice work, Kev - I like your rendition of the figures' insignia & is that an MM ribbon the standing figure's wearing?
Like Jed, I served with Steve in Northern Ireland & he did a couple of commissions for me. Great bloke, I too hope he returns to sculpting again one day because most of his WW1 pieces are classics - especially the ALH figure you've shown elsewhere on the forum.

Hi Chris, I didn’t know Steve that well, but it was clear to me on the few occasions we met, he was a really nice bloke and very knowledgeable too. Can I ask what commissions he did for you, I’ve no doubt you must cherish them. There’s no doubt in my mind that his WW1 pieces are classics... I only fairly recently found that he did a lot of his later stuff in resin and I managed to get hold of a couple luckily. I think they’ve got to be some of his best work and I’ll carry on collecting if ever I see any about.
As for that medal ribbon, I tried my best to make him out to be an ‘Old Sweat’ BEF fellow, who’d seen a bit of service. I must have spent day painting and repainting that ribbon til I got it as good as I’ll ever now. Doesn’t help having Parkinson’s mate, but that’s the very reason I took all this up again and it keeps me steady most of the time!
You and Jed must have some stories to tell! By the way, I held Sidney Godley’s VC for a few moments and read his citation, many years ago now. There a bit of a story there, but not as good as any of yours I’ve no doubt...how about a beer one day!

Thanks Steve, I’m almost at the point where I going to call it finished. Trouble is I’m never satisfied, but I’m glad you think it captures the moment as that was what I was trying to convey.
