Hey guys - another quick update...
The cloak is almost done - until I actually started the work on it, I didn't realize just how large an area it covered... it's HUGE! At this point though, I just need to add an embroidered texture to some elements, and then highlight all the various parts of the patterns. Finally I'll need to do the embroidery around the border (which will probably take forever...) Despite all this though, I think I'm finally in the home stretch and I think he'll be finished sometime over this weekend :)

Freehand is always a nightmare for me and what you did is amazing, i always have a question about this, do you first draw it with a pencil and then use the brush or it is directly brushwork, the symmetry is fantastic also, i made this fantastic bust from YS Masterpieces but till now i have nothing done with the cloak.
Excellent work so far!
Congratulations!!!

Hi Perseas,
Thanks for the for kind words.
As far as the freehand went, I never use a pencil or anything like that - I just used the brush directly. When I do patterns like this, I always keep a generous portion of the color used for the base coat on the palette so if I paint something I don't like or the symmetry is off, I can let it dry and then paint over it with the base coat and do it again. Another important thing to do is to breakdown whatever freehand you're doing into smaller pieces. Almost every complex pattern can be broken down into smaller less complicated patterns - which are usually just repeated or combined in certain ways to create something that looks far more complex than it really is. This is exactly what I've done with the cloak. The entire freehand was done with a Winsor & Newton Series 7 size 000 brush.

Hopefully this helps :)

Hello Phil,
Thank you for sharing the way you made the amazing work with the cloak pattern, it sounds easy as you describe it but seeing it is something else, i prefere admiring it and maybe i try it in another area not so big.
Thank you very much and waiting for your progress!!

I looked at that freehand work and heard a 'thunk'! (the sound of my jaw hitting the table).
Truly superb work Phil.

Cheers,
Andrew
