The Atlanta Military Figure Society is extremely proud to present a two day painting workshop in conjunction with the 2012 Atlanta Model Figure Show. The workshop will be led by Atlanta Grand Master Mike Hall, and will concentrate on the techniques he employs for painting a face with oil paint. Participation in the workshop will include the Artists Preservation Group’s bust of General"] Hancock, and all the materials needed to complete the bust except for paint brushes and a base. The workshop is designed to help improve your level of painting miniatures with oil paint. Mike is well known as a leader in the figure painting world who has achieved the title of Grand Master at the Atlanta Military Figure Show, and he will be sharing his techniques to help the workshop participants improve on their painting skills.

The workshop will run for the two days prior to the Atlanta show, Thursday and Friday, in two 8 hour sessions. Mike will lead the class with a step-by-step demonstration and then the participants will paint along as Mike provides direction and feedback on each individual’s techniques. The class is designed to cover the painting of the face, but will progress to the rest of the bust as time permits. The busts will be cleaned, primed and mounted on a temporary painting block, so the students will be able to concentrate on applying the acrylic base coat and final painting of the bust in oils. The class size is being kept small to allow Mike to spend quality time with each participant.

Included in the cost of the seminar will be the afore mentioned APG bust of General Hancock. Additionally, all the supplies needed, including all acrylic and oil paints necessary to complete the bust, lights, palettes, and cleaning materials, will be provided so you will not need to bring any of these items. What you will need to bring are paint brushes. Mike will be using the following paint brushes and recommends the participants acquire these same brushes for the purpose of getting the most out of this workshop.
These brushes can be ordered from Dick Blick Art Supplies at discounted prices:
09063-1008 Golden Ntrl Filbert/sz 8 $6.33
06833-1004 Kolinsky 6116 Round/sz 4 $10.78
05002-1002 W/N Series 7 Kolinsky/sz 2 $12.04
05887-1002 W/N Sers 7 Miniature/sz 2 $10.80
Additionally, the workshop will be video recorded, and all students will receive a DVD for future reference.
Not included are paint brushes and a finished base to mount the bust.

Thanks Pete! Mike Hall is one of the all time great guys and this will be a lot of fun for a lucky few!

Been wondering when an Oil Seminar was going to happen. I'm wondering no more. Acrylis are fine and a medium which most painters today use but oils are still out there and in many instances, on larger figures, oils are a more desirable solution (my opinion here).

Good luck to the ATL gang and I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can make it back this year (don't hold out too much hope though :()

Well Jim,
It will be great to see you in Atlanta again, if life permits! It's been awhile since we've been able to sit down and talk shop (hobby shop). Yes, we thought it might be nice to hold an oil painting workshop, for those of us that like to use more than one medium. I like both acrylics and oil, and go back and forth between both of them. Our club has sponsored several demonstrations/workshops this year for the local club, inviting the pro's to come give demonstrations, and I have learned alot from them.
Well, old buddy, come on over if you can. I'd love to see you again.
Pete

Well, I'm all signed up for the class and really looking forward to this workshop with one of the all time great guys and a master painter!

I see the club just posted the seminars for the show. Awesome!

The Atlanta 2012 Show Workshop is completely sold out! Mike Hall, the leader of the workshop has completed priming the busts and finished creating the schedule for the two day workshop geared towards improving the skills of oil painters. The art supplies necessary for the class have been received. Next week, I will make a visit to the hotel for another look at the classroom to ensure everything is ready.
We, the Atlanta club, are really excited about this, the first actual hands on workshop held at our show. Seminars are informative, but there is nothing like watching someone actually paint the figure, and then critique the student as the student performs the step right after.
We hope to have these workshops again at future shows.
