Assassination Attempt!

On August 27, 1979, an IRA bomb attack on his motor yacht "Shadow V" killed...

...Admiral Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (the last British Viceroy of India)...

...and three of his companions, including his 14-year-old grandson, Nicholas Knatchbull...:

In addition, several family members who were also on the yacht were injured, some seriously.

Here the salvage of the "Shadow V" which was completely destroyed by a bomb...:

Thomas McMahon, a member of the IRA, was found guilty of the murders on November 28, 1979...

... sentenced to life imprisonment. McMahon will be granted amnesty in 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement.

By the way:
The Mountbattens are originally from Battenberg (Hessen) and had anglicised their all-too-German-sounding surname to "Montbatten" during the First World War. The royal part of the family took the name "Windsor"...

Here is the grave of Lord Mountbatten...:

His killer now lives with his wife and two adult sons in a bungalow in Lisanisk Rose, Carrickmacross, County Monaghan (Ireland)...:
