The first Soviet bombs hit Berlin!


In the early morning hours of August 8, 1941, the first Soviet bombs fell on the German capital of Berlin!

Ten DB-3 bombers...





... which belong to the "Special Group of the 1st Mine and Torpedo Squadron of the Baltic Fleet Air Force" under Lieutenant General Semyon Shavoronkov...



... have taken off from the airport on the island of Saaremaa the night before...











... appear at 1:30 a.m. over Berlin and each drop five 100-kilo type "FAB-100" high-explosive bombs...:





The bombs of the group led by Captain A. Ya. Jefremow...



... only cause minor damage to property, there are no casualties...:



However, the attack has great symbolic and political-propagandistic significance for the Soviet population...:





For comparison:
The first German bombing raid on Moscow on June 22, 1941 was carried out with 127 bombers dropping 104 tons of high-explosive and 46,000 incendiary bombs.

The Berliners are still lucky...
