The first German submarine is sunk!
On August 9, 1914, only nine days after the outbreak of the war, the German Navy lost its first ever submarine in wartime:
SM U-15 ...
...under Kapitänleutnant Richard Pohle...
... is in thick fog at Fair Isle ...
... surprised by the light cruiser HMS "Birmingham" ...:
The submarine is stopped on the surface of the water and loud hammering from inside the boat indicates a repair.
Before the U 15 can dive away, the "Birmingham" rams it at full speed it and sinks like a stone ...:
The entire crew - four officers and 35 men - perished.
After the sinkling became known in Germany, this commemorative postcard was issued ...:
The caption on the front reads:
"S. M. Submarine" U. 15 "above water and while diving.
This submarine was drilled into the bottom by the enemy during a reconnaissance voyage on the east coast of England. "
