Hi Guys,

Does anyone know for certainty what the Austrian border signs looked like during the outbreak of WW1, please?

I have the (very) old Hinchliffe 75mm Benassi figure that I am working on at the moment and the instructions state that the border sign is a " black enamelled plate with a yellow eagle" on it. However, all the sources and pics I can find say that this is reversed, with a black eagle on a yellow backgound?

Can anyone assist, please?

Thanks in anticipation,

Steve

I'd go for the black eagle on the yellow background, sounds the more probable. The border markers were striped yellow/black diagonally.

The April 1976 issue of Military Modelling included an article on Julian Benassi's figures produced by Hinchliffe Models & this included a photo of this figure painted & displaying the face of the sign. I'm pretty sure, it was 40 years ago, the sign is a black eagle on a yellow background with other heraldic devices, red & white stripes etc.

I'm with the others, in that my instinctive response would be black eagle on a yellow background. I was surprised that none of my web searches turned up any images at all of Austrian border signs circa 1900 through 1914.

Prost!
