I have been wondering what Wittmann is wearing under
the u-boat leather jacket. It appears to be altered by
him: added collar tabs and shoulder boards.
What do you think he is wearing? Could it be some sort
of a coverall?
I've always thought the overalls were ex-Luftwaffe issue (cant remember where that one came from), as it would tie in better with the reporter mentioning 'blue', ie drab Luftwaffe blue/grey.
This is what the reporter, Herbert Reinecker, wrote....'He ran through the rain with hunched shoulders wearing a black leather jacket and blue lightweight mechanic's trousers.'
LW overalls came in all colours from white, blue/grey, charcol to black, and presumably by 1944 there would have been stocks to spare from the depleted airforce.
It's also possible that the epaulettes worn on the overalls are 'pushing up' the leather jacket, creating the hunched look in the photo?
Hi Jon
I remember reading that thread a long time ago.
I tried to locate the LW HBT coveralls for a long time
with no good result... I only found thicker winter versions.
I didn't get an impression that he had a distinct hunch....
just a natural relaxed pose.
Jon, excellent research and sculpting. The facial likenesses are brilliant and really looking forward to seeing this one finished, perhaps by next Euro.
Hi Jon, racked up 3900 miles / 7 States / 20 something battlefield sites and took 959 pictures mostly of empty fields and looking through there's about 300 pics of me leaning against a cannon ( not the same one ) A great trip but glad to get home for a rest. May take a while to sort out the pics and not sure if anyone else would be interested. Will E-mail you some .
Cheers Ken
