Hello, all,

I'm looking for a really good book specifically on painting figures using acrylics and, hopefully, written by an artist who also paints figures. I've got Bill Horan's books, Mike Blank's books, Shep's book, had Cartacci's book....I'm just wondering if there's anything new or a standard text I may have missed specifically on the theories behind the proper use of acrylics; layering, glazing, etc.

Likewise, if there's anything on-line that stands out as being really good, please let me know. Unfortunately, there's a LOT on line that is not up to the standards of those of you working here on PF. I'd like to cut to the chase.

I'm headed to the L.I. Show this weekend and want to pick something up.

Thanks!

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

My favourite books on painting figures in acrylics are both from Andrea Miniatures (Andrea Press Publications):

Both are written by artists and give step by step guides to painting figures.

OK, Mark.....thanks very much. Back in 1978, I had the opportunity to have two sessions with the late Phil Stearns. He insisted that the best way to learn figure painting was with nudes so I will definitely look into the Pin ups book.

I appreciate your suggestions,
Michael

I'd personally recommend Danillo's as he uses primarily brushes, my preferred tools.
Julio uses a lot of airbrushing.

So Michael suggest you go for whichever you have a preference for or experience with.

Stay safe

For me Jaume Ortiz's book "Modelling Fallschirmjager Figures" was an eye opener for acrylics. It has a very clear and close up step-by-step of the blending proces.
Alternative are the MrBlack books. Advantage of this is that you see work from various painters.
But it sounds like you read a lot of books already....in the end it's about trying and finding out what works for you.

Cheers
Adrian

OK, all...the feedback here is very helpful and much appreciated. I've made a list of all the titles suggested and will look through these books at the L.I. Show tomorrow and see which strikes a chord.

Cheers from NYC,
Michael
