Could anyone tell me what they think are the best grass tufts available. I have had some unbranded tufts delivered from eBay and they look 'ok' but still a little unrealistic but I know from the bases shown in PF that some great results can be achieved.
I'm asking as its hard to tell from the small images on supplier websites what the effect is. Maybe people could post images of finished bases using their preferred grass effects for PF community to compare etc.
Also I'd like to know if people paint the tufts or just use straight from the box. Any advise on techniques would be great.
Cheers
Mat

Hi Mat,
Horse and Hog hair as used in upholstery, you can get a carrier bag full for under a tenner delivered, pretty realistic and take acrylics no problem.
cheers

Hello Mat, I have used Grass tufts from Continental Models Railways and Scenics. They're from Gwynedd in Wales and their telephone number is 01341 250407.
Best wishes, Gary.

Hi Matt. I tend to use a mix and match method. Generally speaking I prefer to use Mini Natur tufts of various lengths and in amongst these I use deer hair to create longer lengths of 'speargrass'. You can get the deer hair from fishing tackle shops, it's used for fly tying.
The other thing, and apologies for stating the blindingly obvious, is that I always have the ground fully painted before adding the clumps. The reason being that I mix the ground colour into the PVA glue that I use to secure the grass this is much easier t h an trying to paint white glue patches.
I also usually opt for Autumn colours, this allows for much more control if I want to 'green' it up a bit.
Cheers
Derek

Deer hair of varies types are good IE Elk ,Moose and a mix of goats scrotum " I kid you not here" it is used in fly tying for making (Tups indispensable )
re deer hair a small patch will last a very long time, when you cut a clump off you should comb out the fluff ate the bottom of the clump, you can get a miniature comb in the fishing tackle shops also .

Great online shop ; Glasgow angling centre , free mail order on everythin deer hair.png

Zane666 - the tufts from Fredericus Rex do look good in the photo, more realistic and random than the ones I have already. However the grass effect you created in your diorama with brush bristles is stunning - very convincing as a swathe of prairie (which I don't think you could get from the tufts/clumps).
Cheers
Mat
