A friend stopped by after the Kansas City IPMS Nationals and showed me what he had bought at the show. He pulled out the Blackbeard bust by Fort Duquesne and I opened it to examine the casting and quality. I was greatly pleased to see an excellent casted kit of Blackbeard with very little flash or mold seams present. I had heard several comments since Fort Duquesne was bought by John's Models of their problems in casting. Not so here with the casting being what we expect from a manufacturer. After looking at Steve's kit I ordered my own from John along with another figure (to come later) and here are the photos in review of the Fort Duquesne Blackbead, The Pirate.
The kit is comprised of 5 resin cast parts. The smaller parts being attached to sprue for safety in shipping and the larger parts being cleanly cast. The first area I looked at was the ribbons in Blackbeard's beard. Any casting problems will show up here. Each ribbon has an almost see-through flash easily scrapped off with an xacto knife. You can see below the detail of the face and beard which is what makes the painting pure enjoyment.
The main part of the kit is the body / shoulders flowing down to the base plinth which was cleanly sanded and sat flat on the desk.
Below is a close-up of the chest area showing the detailed sculpting.
Below is the back of the main section showing a slight seam line at the bottom. Easily sanded and the seam does not go all the way up the cast.
Below are the remaining small casted parts with the knife attached to the sprue and the gun and holster (locator lugs on the rear to line up on the chest belt of the pirate) The hat has excellent lace detail around the brim.
Below is the Blackbeard bust painted by Marion Ball taken from a Show Disc.
Conclusion
I find this to be an excellent figure kit with the quality we expect from an American Manufacturer. John is expanding the line of Fort Duquesne and adding new releases (sorry.......sworn to secrecy ) as well as bringing out the old Fort Duquesne line and making them available again. An excellent choice for those Pirate enthusiasts.
