After doing the splendid Black Watch bust sculpted by David Grieve and sold by CGS I thought I would get the Blues and Royals one which I found is equally as good, so order for the Life Guard will be going in in the New Year.

As we have done all the prep we can before Christmas, yesterday, I was given some time for working in The Hanger so I have started working on him, and as usual eyes and face comes first.

Bits of the helmet and plume in base colour also done.

I think today, the main part of helmet is today's target with chin strap if time allows.

Nice realistic tones and blending on the face Geoff, eyes look really good as well

Keith.

I can't add any more to what Keith has said, well done.

Many thanks Keith and Bob it's such a shame the peak blocks the rest of the face, you know how much I like painting faces.

Cheers

Another nice one Geoff - aside from other comments above re the face, which I can’t really add anything to, what I like is the vibrant red you’ve used for the helmet plume - looks just like the real deal!

Thank you Chris, the plume I painted with Docrafts Artiste acrylic paint Dark Red which to me looked right with the ref. pics I found on this 'ear interweb. I quite like this paint big 59ml bottle for £1.50 and it is nice and smooth and thick so it goes a long way when thinned.

Thanks Nap, trust you had a super Christmas Day and Carole has been released.;)

I take it you mean the Docraft ones, well, they are just like normal ones like the Vallejo I use but thicker in consistency but about four times more in the bottle for £2.25 a 2oz/59ml bottle.
I use them just like any other acrylic, thinned with tap water. The only thing you have to get used to are the names, but I don't go by names anyway, it the colour I am after , you can always mix something to it to get the colour you want. I mix Docraft and Vallejo with no problem, after all they are pure acrylics.

The All Purpose paint is the one I use. They do do other inks, paints, etc here is there link.

Have a good rest of holiday

I've managed a couple of hours work on the helmet adding some base colour, Gold Brown and London Grey for the brass and silver/chrome areas, first pic, when this was dry I gave the brass area a coat of Citadel Earth wash to give some definition.

I shall use AK True Metal Silver and Brass lightly brushed over it now to give the polished metal look, then when dry buff it up a bit.

Nice start on the helmet, Geoff. I imagined you'd pay a lot of attention to that aspect, because it's the most visible area of the bust & I know the Household Cavalry spend a lot of time buffing up helmets, swords & cuirasses to within an inch of their lives - I spent some time watching them do this when I worked at HorseGuards for a short while in 1993 during the building's renovation.

Hi Geoff

A good session at the bench , that helmet detail is top class sculpting and it's going to be a focal point on the bust for sure

Look forward to seeing more

Thanks Guys, the helmet is super but there is no way I shall be able to get the same finish as the real thing and looking at the ref. pics on Google images to be honest I don't want to as they are so highly polished the definition that I love to show is virtually gone.

I shall now continue adding washes to the tunic over the base coat.

Cheers
