Are there any books that specifically deal with painting busts? I know a lot of books and magazines on modeling figures and miniatures usually include a small section but I'm looking for more than that.

Busts

jacksparrow,
Not seen any specific books just on busts but on the El Greco site there are tutorials by Spephen Mallia which are certainly a good start .
Have you any bust particularly in mind as in my A-Z I have references which might help you .

I don't have any particular busts in mind (at the moment!) but thanks for the reference to the El Greco site. Looks like I've found a hole in the market that someone needs to fill.

Hi Peter!

I don't have a direct answer to your question either. And I don't exactly know what subjects your are into, but I have some work in progress tutorials of some Fantasy Busts I have painted on my personal website in the W.I.P.-section.
I am not sure whether they can give you some ideas and hints for painting a human bust, but maybe they are still worth a look for you.

Regards
Dirk

Busts

Peter ,
Are you perhaps thinking of doing a "how to" on busts ....would I think go down well ..there are of course lots of threads on the various modelling sites as well and everyone has their different techniques , to be realistic I don't think you
can ever have a modelling book like this that will give all techniques etc ...keep PF updated on this ...be interested to see where it goes .

I would love to do a "how to" on busts but don't have the experience to do so. It's been nearly 8 years since I painted my last figure hence why I haven't posted up any pictures up yet. Maybe someone like figuremad could share his wealth of experience with us and other people and we can get it stickied as a tutorial?

Hi
If you can get hold of them...not sure if they are still in print.

Euro Modelisimo Painting Overhead lighting books one and two by Monograph
publications

Book two deals with the painting of busts four projects as well as other figures in a
variety of scales also giving paint mixes

ISBN Number 84-930354-4-0 Book one

ISBN Number 84-930354-5-9 Book Two

Both books offer a great starting point both dealing with acrylics

With all of the figure painting books and articles available I do not think there is any additional information that could be put into a book dedicated to painting busts. ~Gary

This is no doubt simple minded, but painting busts is like painting full figures. Only bigger. I am not sure there are considerations with a bust that do not exist for full figures, though the size of the "canvas" can influence some aspects. If you are already doing full figures, you know what to do with a bust.

Hi Peter,
not sure what medium your working in,but I normaly work in oils and humbrols, the odd time acrylics,I did a couple of articals for mil/mod in the past on busts, but I have found that some of the club demos I've done worked better for our members, with books your still left guessing...when did some work with David Grieve,I spent a good day in our nat/portrait gallery to get a better idea of large scale oil painting.
Then scale it down for the 1/9 bust I was painting at the time,it was trail and error but over all worked.
If you have mil/mod vol 34 no05 (7th may-24th may 2004) wolfe of quebec or figure int no 23 3rd quarter 2007 horatio nelson? you could get a back issues, if it would help?
I know this is old school to some, but may give you an idea.
If you need more I'll try and help if I can!
Best Regards
Paul Blaber
