This is the first time a piece of my work has had an audience of this size. I hope to get some constructive feedback.

The piece is a 75mm Romeo Models, British grenadier of the 18th Regiment of Foot, 1751. I used a mix of mostly, Vallejo acryllics and some Cidadel acryllics. The piece took roughly 30 hours. The sculpting was beautifully done and a pleasure to work on. This was my first 75 and now 54's seem painfully small... or I should get stronger glasses!

What I'm not, is a photographer, so please pardon the photos. I hope they don't detract from the finished product.

Thanx

Hello Colin, You have done a really neat job on a fiddly figure, I am not a great painter so I am always loathe to add any criticism of a fellow painters piece, however from my personal point of view the basework doesn't quite hang together with 4 separate objects not quite forming a whole. Possibly the base which although very nice is slightly too large. These comments are based on personal taste, what matters is whether you are happy with it.
If it was mine I would be very pleased with the result. Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanx for your input... you're right about the base size, I made it in the shop at work before the figure was assembled and I may have over estimated. Probably a smaller base would have tightened up the overall presentation.
Thanx again for the input. It gives some direction on where I can inprove.

Cheers!!

The real problem with the base is the top cap you put on it, this makes it seem bulky (I like the creativity though). I would also finish out the groundwork to the edges of the base to complete the scene. As for the painting he is actually pretty darn good. I think I would just add some stronger highlights and shadows to the figure and maybe thin your paint a little more. Nice work overall and it's nice to see your work. Keep em' coming.

Thanx Mike, I get what you're saying... on the main colours, used up to eight very thin layers from shade to final highlight changing tone in very slight incrimments. Do you think that may have blurred some of the contrast between dark and light?

As this was my first piece at this scale, I didn't want the transistions to be too stark. Maybe I underdid it. I need this kind of feedback because I only know one other painter in my area... this forum will be a great help!

Thanx again

Very nice paintwork, well doneI think you missed an opportunity to do a striking natural scenery and utilise whole space you got on the base. It shold be easy to rectify though.G

Dimitry,
Thank you... yours seems to be a common opinion. I've started sketching up some different options to expand the ground work. I'm torn between more shrubbery and maybe a tree to the rear... or a stone wall and take the groundwork to the edges with some discarded equipment or uniform strewn about.

I love this forum as a source of constructive input... thanks again for your thoughts.
Colin

I have to agree with Keith's comments regarding the base and the groundwork Colin, but overall I think you've done a great job on this piece. I especially like the results you've achieved with the face and the mitre hat.

I have this figure unpainted in my 'grey army' and if mine turns out as nice as yours, I'll be a happy camper.

Thanx for the feedback. it was a challenging piece but those are the most fun to do! Good luck with yours, I'm sure you'll be satisfied with the result.

Cheers

Nice work. Looks like quite an intricate paint job.

I agree with the remarks about the base, but like how you pick them up as constructive comments. Although you are free to build to your own liking of course!

Cheers,
Adrian

Got to say, one hell of a paint job! Some good advise about the base, I would have done the same. I need to think about the figure, base and scenery as a whole, focusing on composition. Thanks for posting, I learned a lot from reading the comments.

Glad to see you posting on the planet!! I have this piece on order and you have set the bar well!

Nice painting on a very interesting piece!

Thanx Kevin,
It was an interesting piece to do, hope you enjoy it too. Don't forget to post some pics as you work on it... will watch for them.

Cheers

Excellent work. I am almost finished with my first 75mm figures and I agree with you, the 54mm seem really small now
