Can anyone help with a couple of queries re some uniform details for British Napoleonic cavalry. The first query concerns belt colours for a trooper of the Horse Guards in 1815. I believe the shoulder belt for carbine is buff but were the cartridge box belt and sword/sabretache belts also buff or were these white? The figure I am working on is wearing the single breasted button up kollet- were the turn backs white and is the troopers lace on collar and cuffs gold or yellow?
The next query concerns the ornamentation on the mirliton shako of an officer 10th Light Dragoon’s circa 1805. The regiment appear to have silver buttons/braid on dolman/pelisse yet the braid and decoration shown in representations of the mirliton are shown as gold which would seem to be at odds for a white/silver laced regiment.
Any help as always would be greatly appreciated.

Neal, as far as Im aware, the Horse Guards' shoulder and cartridge belts were whitened with pipeclay and water, along with the military fashion of the time and I always thought he turnbacks were red, troopers lace yellow...although Im prepared to be corrected by a higher authority!

Regarding the Light Dragoon question, I havent a clue, sorry!!

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I’ve got Franklin’s book on British Napoleonic uniforms which just has a general reference to the belts and the illustrations are all white. The Osprey men at arms book Wellingtons Heavy cavalry seems to show buff belts but not sure if the sword belt is buff or white from that particular picture. I’ve had a look on google and sure enough there are white and buff represented. As for the turnbacks the jacket is the unlaced version with brass buttons up the front which appears in some images to have white turnbacks. The other jacket with the full length lace down the front seems to have red turnbacks as you’ve suggested.

I’ve just looked at another book in my stash - British Cavalry Uniforms since 1660 by Michael Barthorp. He describes the Blues having buff turnbacks and piping all round the edges of the jacket and buff belts, the Blues retaining the crimson flask cord on theirs. I’ve added some pics I’ve found

Many thanks Mirofsoft-would suggest buff belts and white turn backs edged gold/yellow.
