burnishing white metal

What do people do when they want to use the natural metal of the figures but fit is a problem and thus have to use putty to filling gaps between the metal parts. Hope this makes sense.

If the putty shows, I'm afraid you're going to have to paint the metal unless you can match the polished shade with paint on the putty - not something I have ever been able to do.
