Having just purchased a 250mm Jack Sparrow bust from Legion Miniatures I have a question -
Normally when I used to do model aircraft I would paint pieces after priming and then stick them on but this is not possible with this bust as getting to some parts of the bust to paint after its been put together would be really tricky. So should I prime all the parts separately and then add to the bust after being painted?
I have been doing clean up work and dry fitting various parts. Some small areas where the arms join the torso will have to have putty (Squardron) added to fill in parts where it doesn't fit 100% right and small gaps are left.

Hi there

Good question butI feel it's a personal choice , my own is to build , prime and base up and then paint .

Also depends on if parts are separate for instance head, hands ....all about access to areas

Of course if you paint and then build its so important the fit is spot on ...last thing you want are areas to fill when the main torso us done and you go to add arms for instance.

So IMO ...it's an individual choice whatever you are happier doing

I also purchased this bust - still waiting for delivery - so thanks for letting me know to expect some (small?) issues.
I constantly try to teach myself new things. Sometimes that means fitting everything, then priming and painting, sometimes preparing & priming, then fitting and painting as I go along.
At present I am building a warhammer 'hexenthron' for a family member. With this one I am priming individual parts, then either fitting then painting, either part painting, then fitting, then continue painting. In the end I still will have some work to do to try to make each individual part become part of the whole.

From a personal standpoint, I like to pin most of the main parts together and sometimes even some smaller parts using various diameter brass rod. My reason for doing this is actually two fold. The first one is having something to hold on to with a pin vise or whatever to prime and paint, and the second one is I like to be able to put things back together as I go through the process of painting so I can visualize all the contrasts leaving my options open to make adjustments. But I also must add that I try to make adjustments on the sculpt before I even start to paint. Wow...I had to stop myself as I almost went off on a tangent. I'm sure you can find some info on PF as far as pinning parts if that suits your interest. Other then that; I like your avatar if that's your paintwork.....and if it's not your paintwork, I like it anyway.
