Hi Christopher
I've got an old Sony digital camera which is o.k. but if I was buying one now I would look for one that has high optical zoom ( mine is three) which is way out of date and with macro obviously.Mine is 7 mps but I throttle it back to 3mps when I'm taking photos of figures.Don't go out and pay funny money as there's lots of good cameras out there. There was a site on the web I used which gives you comparisons of the cameras and the photographs they can take but I can't remember what the hell it was called.I have a habit of taking ages to buy anything like cameras,TV's etc, etc.Drives the wife bonkers.Trying to break the habit.
You'll get a fair amount of info about this thread soon with the all singing ,all dancing technical side of cameras but when it comes down to it you really can't go wrong with the cameras of today.Pick your budget and pick the camera you like.
One last thing is that lighting is as important as the camera when taking pictures of figures.
