I have 1/20 and 1/16 figures with closed fists and I'm wondering if I can get away with gluing on a rifle onto the top of the fist itself.

Would this look odd that the fingers are not spread apart to hold the trigger grip? Do I need to sculpt putty around the fist to make it larger somehow?

If I can't get away with the optical illusion, I can always glue the rifle to the front or side of the body as if on a sling.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the size of the part of the rifle the hand is holding. Have a look at Google images of soldiers holding rifles. This may help.

It would certainly look very odd if the clenched fist is used.
Close your fist.
Now start opening it to give a suitable hole for the item you're considering.
You'll find that the thumb that was tight over the fingers is now well separated from them, and the finger tips are significantly away from the palm.
This is what you need to replicate

Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks for the answers. I agree that a fist holding a rifle will look odd. The fingers don't need to be as clenched and curled when holding the trigger grip. I won't go ahead and glue anything to it and instead hang the rifle on a sling besides the arm and fist.

maybe, and I think it would have to be on an individual basis of both figure & gun (or other implement), the fist could be left closed, drilled, wired, and then a like length section of the tool removed, and the two remaining pieces drilled and attached to the hand's wire ends.

that all sounds awkward, but i'm sure the idea is conveyed ... a bit.

Verlinden sells 120mm hands that hold a trigger grip. My figure's hand is a woman's so I don't know if the Verlinden man's hand size will match even if I file it down. Also, this kit now seems very rare with only one vendor selling it on eBay for $37USD. Ouch! I recall it used to be $$16 or so.

I think the easiest thing for me to do is just hand the rifle on a sling and not have any fists hold it.
