Hi,

I am facing double cornea surgery, and so I have been purchasing some larger busts to work on, as 200mm or larger is all I can clearly see. I am hoping to be able to work in 100mm/120mm post-surgery.

I loved this when I bought it and am ready to start, but I cannot identify the uniform. It was sold as simply "British Redcoat."

Does this represent a dragoon? I see the 5 in the helmet plate but a search for 5th dragoons has yielded nothing.

I have found similar uniforms, but they do not have the scallops on the sleeve or on the lapels.

Just want to ID it and to see if any alterations need to be made for accuracy. I've taken a photo of the box art (below).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert.
Look at the helmet plate I would say heis of the 5th Regiment of foot. Royal Northumberland Fusilers
Mick

The 5th Foot also had green facings with bastion shaped lace at this time.

Thank you, Roger. I wasn't sure on the facings, but I was going to go with green based on a couple of fuzzy images I found online.

I have it together and just need to do a bit of filling. The visor and feather were broken and had to be repaired, otherwise it went together easily.

Hi
just to wish you well with the surgery.

The shade of colour on the Regimental facings for the
5th was called : 'Gosling Green'.

Hi there ,

Firstly as Paul says wish you well in the surgery

This is the 1/5 th scale bust of a AWI Light infantryman from Verlinden ..a large piece and still great in my opinion ...got it in the GA ..will paint just need to find a space to display!

Happy painting

Hi, guys...

I agree with you, Nap. I think it is a nice bust. I actually have never painted one, but given my eye situation I had to start looking at them. I have been cherry-picking the better Verlinden busts in the past few weeks.

His surgery went okay, though I am not happy with my re-scultping of the hair. I used Aves Epoxy Sculpt (white). I think it may be getting old. It seemed to dry faster than I remember (or else I was taking too darn long).

I'm going to get a hole drilled for a support and then a light coat of primer on. If it looks good I will move one. If not I will try to correct the hair again. This was the main problem area for me, the fit between helmet and hair/head.

Also, thanks for the uniform plates and the term "gosling green." I admit at this moment I have NO idea how I'm going to mix that one. :)

Robert here's some regimental prints from later on in their history.
If you went by this it would be too dark a colour.

I use Vallejo and would try and make a 'sage' green with a touch of blue in it.
I would mix yellow green, with a touch of grey blue, and lighten with Iraqui sand if needed.
That should get you close to the colour on the box art which I think is pretty damn good.

In the Victorian period it was a heck of a lot darker.

Robert /Paul.
Just to make it a little more confusing as you know paul From 1881 ( Victorian period) the facings would have been White.( Childers Reforms) Then a change again in 1935 to Blue when they became Royal. But above prints are Pre 1881.

Thanks again to all of you for the comments and helpful uniform plates, color suggestions and information.

I don't have some of the paints mentioned for the gosling green. I was planning in using one of the yellows I have with a dash of green, and then perhaps a dash more of gray?

I was thinking I would might a thread in the VBench area once I get the base coat on and the oils started a bit... a great painter, I am not, and I will certainly welcome any feedback. I admit though, this makes me nervous. The talent on here is intimidating.

Go for it.........
Do put your work on show, this is your model club.
There is lots of willing and constructive help available.
How can you get to a higher level if no one sees where and how to help.

To those colours I would have a dash of blue available too, you may need it.

Do show us how it's going, and enjoy it.
