Wow, now that's unique! It's great to know someone is producing subject matter other than vikings and Highlanders!

Is it me or the likeness to Muamar Gadaffi is strong with this one?

You'd expect a pink healthy face from a Ukrainian on lots of fresh air, organic food and tachanka rides :) I feel paintwork aged the face too much.

Superb sculpting as always though, all the best, Carl!

Hello Dimitry :)

I don't blame you for expecting that kind of healthy face from a Ukranian, but unfortunately, Nestor had a sallow complexion :( and it was my biggest headache on how to depict it on a 75mm face without making him look dead

However I HONESTLY don't agree that he resembles the infamous Colonel, since I know the Colonel better than most of you  and since I know that ONLY my painting is making him look so
If you look at this website here http://www.nestormakhno.info/images.htm you will agree with me that Carl captured the likeness very very well & that Nestor looked anything but the Colonel :notworthy:

In this website here http://www.blackcatpress.ca/Russian%20Revolution%20in%20Ukraine.html you will find this extract re Nestor's sallow complexion, which translates into a yellowish & unhealthy colour BTW  "Externally Makhno did not create the impression of being an outstanding person. Short in stature with a sallow complexion, he was poorly educated and his health was anything but robust".

Warm Regards,

Ray ;)

Hi Ray,

You are right. My comments were meant more tongue in cheek rather than to make a serious statement, and by no means an attack on paintjob which is great.

Nestor wasn't a well person (and, admitting own ignorance, I had to dig for info) after TB he had in jail in 1911 and they do describe yellowy complexion. I do also feel that in this instance sallow (having considered his illnesses) means just a yellow tinge to pale complexion rather than yellow colour to skin indicative of jaundice (hepatitis style) but thats based purely on my medical knowledge and assumption ( guilty ...) . Again, I dont know if the lighting in that picture makes the mini look that way.

And with the colonel remark - I meant that particular mugshot, not Nestor
himself. Well, one who never cracked a joke that flopped on its belly - throw a stone at me first:)

Anyway, thanks for pointing things out and I have learnt something as well ;)

Hi Dimitry,

Don't worry honestly, as no offence taken on any front by your honest observations (y)

I didn't realise that you were just referring to that mug shot  you gotch me thinking that you seriously contemplated of Nestor as being a lookalike of the infamous Colonel :notworthy: that is why I went on the defensive vis a vis Carl's sculpting  so thumbs up to you for snaring me flat out on that one :ROFLMAO:

I'm inserting the same pic with Nestor's face, just as I shot it :notworthy: this will help to analize the different "shades" in which the same pic can be viewed under different "lights" I would greatly appreciate it, if you can upload it next to the Colonell on your thread, so that "two" Nestors would be flanking the notorious Colonel

Re sallow complexion :thumb down: again I honestly thought that you overlooked the meaning of the word or overlooked/didn't care to look for info :cautious: on who/how Nestor actually was :( sorry, honestly I didn't know that you have sound medical knowledge & you were assuming what you were assuming which does make sense after all (y) so stop feeling guilty please, as I told you no offense taken on any front, so thank you, because I have learnt something as well

Keep safe n strong

Ray ;)
