Hi Martin,

My understanding is that Cassels Earth is the name of an oil colour paint (a dark brown colour). The Italian company Maimeri in their artist oil range has this colour (Number 490).

Try going to the Maimeri web site

http://www.maimeri.it

Follow the link to oils and then artist oils and you will find the Cassels Earth 490 in there.

The exact web page is:

http://www.maimeri.it/FineArts/colorprod.asp?mnu=0102

I am sure this brand of oils is stocked in all good art stores. This is a brilliant range of oil paints ...

Hope this helps.

Ciao for now
Franco

Hi Martin,
Cassel earth, also known as Vandyke brown and Cologne earth, is a brown earth containing iron and manganese oxides and lignites, which are organic substances from peat or coal. It was first used in European painting in the 17th century and is still in use today. This color is found in the pictures of the old masters, among them Rubens, who used it mixed with gold ochre as a warm, transparent brown, which held up particularly well in resin varnish.
So you look at Winsor & Newton and there you see they have Cassel Earth under the name Vandyke brown.
