I just went to the paint.net website recommended by Alexandre. It looks like it might be the place to find the answer to this question but after browsing around for about 15 minutes or so, I'm not real sure. Is there a place on the web, hopefully a free download, that'll let you put a different background(mountains, forests, desert, etc.) on the photos we take of our finished figures? I know the photoshop program has this feature but it also has a pretty generous price tag to go with it.

Thanks, Mike

Mike, Adobe makes a "streamlined" version of Photoshop they call Elements that only runs about $99 that should allow you to do what you want. It's like a watered down version. What you have to understand is this, you say "put a different background in", it all sounds realatively easy when we say it, but in practice, you need a piece of software that is going to allow you to "grab" or select the background properly in order for you to be able to change it in the first place. It's not terribly hard to do, you just need a software that has the flexibility to do a thing like this. That's why Photoshop has that type of price tag. There's probably 5 or 6 ways you could go about "knocking-out" backgrounds with it! The cheaper you go, the more rudimentary the proceedure you have to work with and the less controll you have. I've been using Photoshop for years, and quite frankly, I couldn't live without it! I like the control and the variation I get with it. I've also use Elements a bit, and while useful, it's no photoshop. You might look for a used copy of Photoshop on eBay. You might be able to score a version that is once or twice removed from the latest and you just might find yourself a bargain. Make sure it's not a copy! Good luck!

Jay,

Thanks for the reply. I thought there might be a free download somewhere on the internet in keeping with my cheapskate nature. I guess I'll have to shake the dust off the coin purse.

There is a great piece of free graphics software called Gimp. This is the home page and this from where you can download it. I used one of the previous versions time ago before getting the Photoshop and it worked well, it is a true powerful program. You have to spend some time with it but the learning curve it requires is worth the effort.

Bingo!! After a very quick look through, this might be just what the doctor ordered. It'll take me a while to get comfortable with it but I think this'll do it.

Thanks Luca.

Gordy & Mark,

Thanks for the updates. Unfortunately, I'm not only cheap but also lazy. I haven't really sat down to take a serious look at these tutorials but now with your added endorsements, I'll make the effort while I'm on vacation. When I master it, I'll post a few photos.

Thanks again,

Mike
