I am painting this figure from Metal Models. It is titled, Chasseur d'Afrique, Crimea 1854. I was wondering if any one can help me with some of the details. I have a couple of questions. I can not, for the life of me, find a decent pic or plate on the web of this uniform.
1. The box art appears to have yellow tabs on the collar. Is there yellow on the collar and what would it look like?
2. Should there be a blue stripe down the outside of the leg?
Thanks in advance, Rusty

One thing i do know about this uniform: the tunic should be medium to light blue. It is definitely NOT dark blue. Sorry.

Here is a scan of the original kit artwork:

Sorry for the quality of the image. But it does show the correct colors for painting.....

Rusty:

I checked 'Les Chasseurs d'Afrique' and it appears the boxart above is very accurate. As Mike has pointed out, the jacket is more of a medium blue. The collar is yellow trimmed with blue. The pants appear to have single med blue stripe running down the pant.

I have seen illustrations depicting the uniform with a double blue stripe (officer) or no stripe (trooper). In addition, the collar is plain blue. However, both are more 1860-1870 era.

Mike & Paul, thanks for the response. It looks like I got the blue wrong. I will have to fix that. Paul, I will go with the yellow on the collar. I will work the jacket this weekend and post again.
Thanks, Rusty

Rusty,

The collar is blue with yellow flashes - not the other way around. Again, the kit artwork is correct. I always liked this figure - that is why it is one of the few kits by other sculptors in my collection. It is a cool subject....

Here is an update on this figure. I adjusted the color of the jacket. I am far from done with it I need to clean it up a bit. Let me know what you think.
Mike the box art piece I have for this figure is the much darker than yours, that is what I used for my initial reference. I am not sure why there is such a difference in the box art. However all the other images verify the lighter blue is accurate. Thanks for scanning the image for me. It was a big help.
