Hi Jim,

very nice bust !! I like it very much and I think your dad will be a proud man.

The only thing I would work out a little bit more are the eyeballs. I think they stand out a little bit too far over the lids.

Happy sculpting,
Markus

Hi James,
Your dad is very lucky, what's is the link, the name Joseph in common?
I don't know what image you are following, I hope this image can be useful. I think it's a right middle looking, between the pics with the war bonnet, good only for the movies, and other photos when the chief was really old and sad.
Best regards
M

Hello Jim,

What a great subject for a gift! Chief Joseph was one of the most respected Native American leaders by both the white men and the Indians.

I suppose this is a work in progress and there are further developments to be expexted. At this stage, I think you've already achieved a good likeness. IMO, two points worthy of attention are the nose (a little too wide to the photo) and the chin that needs to be more prominent.

Also check out the collar of his shirt which looks a bit like a modern turtleneck to me! :p

Simple changes but IMO which will add much to the sculpt.

Two more things: what is the size/scale of the bust and which material are you using?

Great to see you back on the Planet. Looking forward to the next step,

Quang

Markus, Marcellin and Quang - Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate the feedback.

I sculpted this in about 3 sessions (about 2 hours each). A very quick sketch - my dad's birthday is fast approaching (May 4th) and I really wanted to get this sculpted, painted and mailed before then. The idea came on the spare of the moment in one of our recent phone conversations. The last time he visited, he commented on how much he liked the one I have in my display case (Quang's Pili Pili Chief Joseph bust), so I thought I'd give a go at sculpting him one on my own. I'd really like to take some time to do the subject justice in the future.

Markus - I agree with you on the eyes.

Marcellin - Thanks for that great photo! I did not have that one and I'll certainly be able to use it!

Quang - As always, your comments are very helpful and accurate. He's 1/5th scale and done in Super Sculpey.
