Greetings.
My favorite film of all time is Zulu. (Sorry Chimp you have a rival) Among with others that appear on the telly from time to time ie Waterloo, El Cid, Taras Bulba, The Vikings and a few more But the on I always wanted to see again was The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968)
Over the years I have checked the TV listings and have been able to record them all. All except the Charge. and its been a bit of a P take with the wife and daughters. On Sunday daughter No,2 brought me the charge around on a USB stick, Wings had posted his Lord Cardigan, Result.
I waited for Mrs B to go to bed and sat down with a large Irish and a bowel of peanuts to watch 2hrs 7mins of complete and utter SH one T. What happened in the last 47 odd years.

Is it me or does it happen to all of us,

Mick

Nope, it ain't you mate it was a crap film.

The early issues of Military illustrated carried articles about it from the point of view of their historical consultant.
The director wanted all cavalrymen in red overalls 'cos they looked nicer' and so on.
The only redeeming feature was the cameo of Norman rossington.
His bits in the film were good I thought
I saw Zulu on the first day it was shown in liverpool in the '60's and I made sure my son saw it at the same age too.
Albeit on VHS. I am so proud to have influenced him and he still quotes lines from the film in everyday usage.

When someone gave way for him in the car on Saturday, he said in a strong welsh accennt
"Oh.....There's very nice of him". I PMSL
So proud.

The first time I saw El Cid was in the camp cinema at the Guards Deopt at Pirbright with my best mate Cid Lockwood we were aged 8/9 Cid a little younger. Towards the end of the film the shout goes up with the troops 'The Cid is dead' This is followed by a reply from my right that the whole Cinema heard. @ Oh no I F .... in aint. Im sitting up the back with Micky B. After the laughter had died down we were both clumped alongside the ear for swearing, followed by another clump from my dad next tea time after he got to hear about it.
Happy days

Thanks Rich for your kind thought but please dont be offended if I leave the viewing for another 47yrs.. That will make me 110yrs.Good chance I'll be dead by then so I will pass it on to someone who as yet not had the pleasure . If thats ok with you.:arghh:

I would say you have stopped drinking or smoking the wacky backy;);) , It was a crap film then and it's a crap film now I have it on CD for reference only . Many British films made around that time had a left wing approach to UK history and would portray history in their own way of thinking . It's a pity no other film has been made to cover this historical event .

And before Peedee comes on with Errol Flynn and the Charge Of The Light Brigade , great film though it was most of it concentrated on the Indian Mutiny , only the last 15 minutes had the Charge .

Naaaah.
Errol Flynn should have stuck to swashing and buckling, he was even crap as custer !

That one was all bollocks too mate.

Hollywood should be banned from making historical fillums involving the britiish military.
In my opinion they change the word historical for hysterical too often.

The only hollywood film with real historical credibility was yul brynner's portrayal of rameses.
The film and it's stills are used as historical references even today.

Loving your work chips,
It's not often I have to defend myself on here from things I was going to say ! ;) :D

Hey Mick I know you didn't like it, but........there's always an upside......
If you'd watched the version off you tube I notice it was three minutes longer.
Wahey :D

Well chapps that childhood bubble has burst and all the superglue in the world wont put back together.
But this has got me remembering the good old days as a child by old dad would take my sister and I out every saturday to the cinema or a museum or the likes.
He was a Sgt in the Guards. (old school) He would take us out and he would be in Blues, white cloves and walking out stick. Once when we went to the cinema the goodies over come the baddies, I put up a cheer and threw my cub hat up in the air. Not a major problem you might think. But in those days at the end of the film the National Anthem was played. So as we had to look for said hat we couldnt scoot out just as the credits rolled as normal. Dad stood at attention and saluted. That went down well with the people trying to get out cos there wasnt a snow balls chance in hell in getting past him.

Off at a slight tangent but the best Custer movie (although technically it is a "mini-series") that I've ever seen was this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_the_Morning_Star_(film)

I had it on VHS years ago but at some point I flogged it on eBay. With hindsight I wish I hadn't because for some inexplicable reason it's never been released on DVD and is now hard to find on tape for a sensible price.

Remakes and sequels are never as good.

Tony Robinson has been in the news this week saying that a new series of "Black Adder" is on the cards (26 years after the last one, unless you count a couple of '90s "specials"). I also await the new "Dad's Army" movie with trepidation.

I attended the premiere of The Charge of the Light Brigade all those years ago (my aunt worked in the film industry).
Remember being bored rigid with most of the film but captivated by the action scenes and the audience which included the stars who were 'outblinged' by the Army officers attending.

Watched The Man who would be King for the umpteenth time last night (y)

Once a year when the missus is away I settle down with plenty of beer and get take aways delivered and watch the full box set of Dads Army.
Quite hopeful about the forthcoming movie, some good actors ........ but will be trying to treat it as a seperate entity from the series.

Just did a quick google for Private Shultz. Having tried to get copies before without success I was delighted to discover that the BBC has finally released a DVD set of the series, just about to order this now (y)

Del.
Yes I'm looking forward to the Dads Army film as you say it has some great actors, But it will be very hard not to compare the two.
A bit like last of the Summer wine, They did not know when to stop and have milked it inside out.
