Is anyone else sick to death of Christmas ads . we have been hammered for a month now and there's still a month to go . I'm slowly losing the will to be merry . So to fight back I'm only buying my Christmas gifts from firms who don't advertise . So far I have Jewsons who are good for a bag of cement and some bricks , City Plumbing some lengths of copper pipe and a few bends and tees , Screwfix who dosen't need screws !!! and finally Tool Station anything from tool station should be welcome .
And if all these gifts lovingly chosen don't go down well I'm sure I can make use of them .
So it only remains for me to say Bah Humbug .

Don't you find moaning about Christmas is getting earlier and earlier every year ;)

I love Christmas and everything about it. Even the advertising doesn't bother me.
Loads of family round, proper big sit round the table dinners, the usual retelling of family anecdotes.
A lot of happiness and a wee bit of sadness, crackers, stupid hats and awful jokes. Brilliant.
I bet that most of the Brits on here who are 60+ remember and can probably sing the words to the Tom Thumb
advertisement........there you go that's it lodged in your heads now :p

Come, come Ron - Surely you'll enjoy a good dram and some plum pudding on the day, or you can come Down Under and enjoy a sunny Aussie Christmas with a seafood Christmas lunch. I'll pop another prawn on the Barbie for you, and what about a crayfish (lobster) tail?

I was in retail for a lot of years and, then and for many, many years afterwards, I detested, hated, despised (see where I'm going?:)) Christmas. It took my daughters' joy and excitement with it to finally get this Grinch to accept it. Now, that I have two grandsons, I'm seeing it through their eyes now.

That being said:

I don't like the advertising that starts so early - late August! Hallmark Channel here in the US has 'Christmas in July' insipid movie marathons. Were I king of the world, no one could advertise anything having to do with Christmas until 12:01 am the day after Thanksgiving - like that'd ever happen!

I still hope Scrooge (1951 Allister Sim version) and the Grinch (animated version) don't relent ...

I've got a cousin who lives in Brisbane and at this time of year all he does is moan how hot it is there. He longs for the British cold weather. It seems like everybody's miserable at Christmas. Come on, cheer up.

Chippy,
Before Christmas, it was six days a week; come the day after Thanksgiving, until 6 pm Christmas Eve, it was 7 days a week, 9 hour days on Saturdays and Sundays and 14 to 16 hour days during the week.

Most every Christmas Eve, when I closed the store and got home, I became sick as a dog - I had to get better before I could die. I spent most every Christmas Day recovering because, come December 26th, it was time to open the doors for the returns and exchanges. Joys of owning a retail business; what profits there were (and sometimes, they were pretty slim), got plowed back into new stock. I could tell you stories about living on Ramen noodles, canned tuna, boxed macaroni and cheese and hotdogs, but you'd lose your appetite!

I finally got smart, had a blow-out sale the last Christmas and cleaned the shelves and racks out. The happiest day I had owning that business was when I locked the doors of the empty store and gave the keys to the landlord!
