Hi All,
There has recently been a growth in the number of 54 & 75mm figures depicting the Anglo Zulu wars. While my preferred scale (due to the old eyes) is 120mm I did not want to miss out on these figures.

So sometime in the future I will be down scaling to have a go at these wonderful kits. With that in mind I purchased this 54mm from Chronos Miniatures stock number CHM-54020.
chronos-miniatures.com also available in the UK www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk

The 54mm figure sculpted by Ernst Veingart is packed with detail and depicts a private from the 2nd Warwickshire’s 24th regiment of foot 1879. I think Ernst has captured the look and stance of a Cenotaph statue and I mean that in a most positive fashion as that’s what grabbed me. The stance in my opinion looks to be post battle and reflective with the head bowed slightly. For a 54mm it looks bigger when the photos are first viewed and I think this down to the level of detail sculpted into the kit, this would have been a most imposing looking figure in 120mm.

The kit is cast in 10 grey resin parts (parts list below) and arrived in clear plastic protective box; this was further protected by a cardboard box. Besides the casting blocks there does not seem to be too much clean up. Five of the parts are keyed for accurate placement and dry fitting some of the other parts posed no problems, they are a nice snug fit. The bayonet may need to be straightened by immersion in hot water and then cold.

The figure has two options either wearing the Foreign Service helmet or posing wounded with a bandaged head.

1 Main body (feet keyed for base)
2 Base
3 Right Arm (keyed for body)
4 Martini Henry Rifle
5 Foreign service helmet
6 Main head
7 Upper part of wounded head
8 Oliver pattern water bottle (keyed for fitting to body)
9 Haversack (keyed for fitting to body)
10 Ammunition pouch (keyed for fitting to body)

I will let the photo’s speak for themselves, but one point to note, there was no strap from the left hand side of the Oliver pattern water bottle up to the main body as shown in red on the photo, but this can easily be fashioned.

In conclusion a nice little kit for the Zulu war or Victorian enthusiast packed with some lovely accurate details and knowing this is 54mm an even more impressive sculpt from Ernst. It certainly went straight onto the buy list.
Chronos are delivering some outstanding figures in this scale from a broad spectrum of history and some of my other personal favourites are:

Pioneer British Grenadier Guards, 15th Bengal Infantry, Russian Fusilier, Swedish Grenadier and the WW1 Indian Infantry figures.

Cheers
Richie

Hi Richie,
This looks like a really sharp casting of a great subject, As you say it's a fine pose and the various components look to fit together very nicely.
Sadly my eyes won't allow me to paint such a tiny piece, so I will look forward to your rendition of this little beauty.
Great review Mate and many thanks for taking the time to post it.
All the very best,
Keith

Excellent review Richie. I've been trying to phase 54mm out of my collection, but like Pachino said in the last Godfather movie, "they keep pulling me back in.";) This will definately be on my must have list as well.

Hi Keith,
Yes a sharp casting packed with detail, I just hope my eyes are up to the job.:) Definitely an optivisor job.

Hi Tom,
Thanks, a nice little figure to give you the Godfather treatment.;)

Very nice figure but like others my days of slapping paint on 54mm's is long gone. The close up photographs on this one though suggest sculpting and detailing of a figure in a larger scale and I particularly like the base.

One of my favorite subjects ever. Beautiful sculpting. Does the expense pouch seem a little gigantic to anyone else? Looks like a PPSH ammo pouch. Not much of a detraction from the piece though. As it is designated "#1" I hope this means more of them and maybe a Zulu or two.

Hi Geoff,
I know what you mean, 120mm sometimes is trying:)

Hi Steve,
The expense pouch does seem a touch big, but without measuring it I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Have added a couple of pics and at a glance to the pics it does not seem too bad. I agree about some more figures and yes some nice Zulu's would not go amiss, especially in larger scale.;)

cheers
