I recently returned to the world of military miniatures after a long break. I have my eye on painting Seil's Union drummer in 54mm. I was wondering how best to approach painting the regimental eagle on the drum shell? Is it best to sketch it first in pencil or just do it freehand? In general how do most approch flags and patterns that some people do so beautifully? The practice, practice, practice is a given. I'll probably try one or two on a file card first. If it wasn't for the cords crossing over the pattern, I'd paint a decal and then apply it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Kurt, Either method would work. If you have a harder lead drawing pencil you could lightly "suggest" the main forms. This would at the very least give you a guide as to where the main elements that make up the design go. It's not be a bad idea to experiment first Though. A couple of practice sessions could just be what's needed ro work out any unforseen problem areas. Good luck.~Gary
