Look at the photograph and at the sculpting.

Look at the soldier's hand who is being comforted and compare the hands of the two in the photograph.

This is a really nice sculpture. Very touching and well executed. However, the "problem" with the hands is not a problem! The proportion problem is with the size of the heads. They are too small and the hands look big because they are too large in proportion to the heads.

This is a constant problem when sculpting. It is very easy to focus on one part without keeping the overall proportions of the whole figure in mind. It takes a sharp and critical eye, and a willingness to undo your work when things go awry, to maintain the coherence of the whole while working on the individual parts. It is also one of the dangers of using the figure sculptor's methodology of making each part separately.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Compassion - This Art!

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum and came accross it a few days ago. I bought this piece 3 days ago and its just arrived.

WOW!!!!! - Just like you said, this really is a moving piece of work!

I normally paint whole figures up to a maximum of 120mm but maybe its because these guys are seated that 200mm works on this vignette?

Now I've got the piece, the hands don't seem over large, nor the heads too small! There is a real sense of presence to the piece and its superbly cast.

Personally, I like this new direction in our hobby - a move toward a real sense of artistic story within the work. Well done to Mark and Classicae.
