This is my Latorre Models LM-5404 “Clinch Rifles” in fatigue dress which became Company A, 5th Georgia Infantry and is painted in acrylics. I wanted to get away from the all-green uniform and fortunately Captain Charles Platt of the 5th provided the solution. In his Jan 1860 letter to Gov. Brown he described their uniforms mentioning “Our fatigue dress consists of a dark green cloth jacket, trimmed with gold lace, green cap and black pants.” I added a secessionist cockade to the front of his jacket which were popular at the time and re-sculpted the rear vent area of the coat to represent a more accurate pattern. Looking back I wish I had modified the back of the Orr’s Rifles. The Clinch Rifles green was a fairly dark blue-green based on the photos I have seen of a surviving example. Mine might be a bit light but allowing for scale effect I am happy with it.

Fantastic job on this one. I have this one primed but wasn't sure how to approach the green. I have a decent "chasseur green" mix (Vallejo Deep Green + Black), very dark, would that work or would I need to add a touch of blue to match the proper shade?
I like the change to black for the pants as well.

Great paint work

Colin;

My biggest problem was to get a decent undercoat for the green. For my figure I used Vallejo 970 Deep Green with 898 Dark Sea Blue (2:1) but I think your mix might work just as well. Remember that you have a lot of leeway working with surviving examples of 150 year old dye lots and 19th century color standards.

Great work. The detail of the fence is very cool, as well as the ribbon in his chest. About the green, I think it is ok, but maybe a bit darker is better. I say this after watching this painting by Don Troiani.

Valid point Eduardo. In real life my miniature is a bit darker but not as much as Troiani's. If I were to do it over I might go a bit darker but not that much. Thanks for your comments.

Just spotted this one Rick and coincidentally I'm just putting one together so it's a great help to see how you've done yours (Like the cockade idea, which adds a nice detail).

One problem is the blinkin' sword blade - okay maybe not a problem yet, but I really don't like the idea of a butt join where the sword touches the hilt.o_O Did you bother pinning yours? Am I fretting unnecessarily?

Cheers
Paul

Rick,
Very nice job on a very good sculpt. The green might be a little light, but it doesn't bother me. Good touch with the coat lining!

Best Regards,

Rod

Rick, One of my favorite Latorre figures! Like the way you staged it, painted it and the addition of the cockade. Well done Rick!

Really wish you would make your way back to our Atlanta Show in the future. I well recall your work and always enjoyed talking with you!
Still recall that Little Generals gem of the Cherokee Rifles you did back in the mid 80s.

Kindest Regards,

Terry Martin-Member of the Atlanta Miniature Figure Society of Atlanta
