Two of these photos are pre-war - the 10th Gurkha Rifles and the British officer in Egypt, but the rest are examples of Gurkha and Sikh warriors on the Western Front 1914 - 1915.
About 1.5 million soldiers of the Indian subcontinent served during the First World War, 850,000 of them overseas. More than 80,000 would not survive the war. Although there were Indian Army troops on the Western Front through the end of the war, most were re-assigned to other fronts by the end of 1915.
