violet has been a difficult color to shade. any suggestions ?

I used Royal purple as a base color, add ivory or pale sand to the base for lights and add black to the base color for shadows.
I also bought Foundry royal purple system,it consist of 3 bottles, base, light and shadow.
my preference is a good contrast between lights and shadows, and i had to add a little of ivory to my last light and black to my last shadow with this system, but works very nice.

Daniel,

Sounds like some cool projects, don't forget to post them as you go.

As far as being a pro... that ain't me!!! Alot of my mixes came from a book from Pegaso, Advanced Figure Modelling. Great book with awesome SBS articles.

I just took the mixes they used and tweeked some of them and used some as is. Studying their mixes gave me an idea of how to get to a colour I need and how to shade and highlight them. Still learning everytime I try a mix... some attempts were brutal, others worked first try.

Anytime I can help someone else...
Colin

Thanks Colin for your advice.
This is a lot of trial and error, like you said, some brutal, some worked great.
Best regards.
Ps:visit my post,i will keep posting as i progress with my regiments.

I am in the middle of a Napoleonic cavalry diorama which will include a KGL Light Dragoon. The main blue is an in-between shade that on research has come to be anywhere from a deep sky blue to just short of navy blue.

Any insight on how I can come up with a med.blue?

Colin

That pic was from few years ago,but you can have an idea odf the Royal blue base.
I really learn troughout the years that the color hue or shade is "in the eye of the beholder".
People have different interpretation of "what the true color is".
I used to break my head trying to research colors and often, end up frustrating myself.
Even if you want to use something from an illustration, when you see it in the computer will varies from site to site,so i try to resemble colors to my best knowledge and liking.

Thanx Daniel,

The blue on the drummer is very close to how I picture the light dragoon blue. I give that mix a try, I'll be starting him this week, as soon as I fiish off his opponent in the diorama. Did you use the Royal Blue straight from the bottle or tone it down for the base colour? If so, with what?

Thanks again

Colin

Clolin,I've used vallejo royal blue with a tiny dab of black, for the lights added off white to the base and for shadows I've use dark prussian blue and las shadow added a little bit of black.
Did few washes of intermediate blue, which is a blue-gray to "mute" a little
I hope it works for you.
I am anxious to see your project.
Cheers

That sounds dead-on. I'll give it a test run when I get back from physio this morning.

If nothing else, having my knee replaced has given me lots of free time to get some painting done:lol:. I don't go back to work until March so I can chip away at my Grey Army(y).

Thanks for mix

Colin

Lol,I hope you'll have a good recovery.

I think that if I want to have time to work on my project I will have to break my 2 legs lol,I would love to have time to paint

Hi, sorry to bring back an old thread but I have a few questions. I've just used the black paint range from andrea (which is six layers process) if I wanted to use this process for say the brown leather would I just add more 845 Sunny Skin Tone + 929 Light Brown + 851 Orange (more black for shadow) to the mix? Also if I wanted to match uniform colours, for example a red coat and I found a red that matched spot on would that red be my base? Hope that my questions are understandable if not just say. Thanks in advance.

I am afraid that i am not familiar with the Andrea black system , i do have the white system and works really well , i even mmixed with somo other colors to give more shadows or lights , so i believe you should experiment with it and find the shade of color that will make you happy with the result.
Remember that a good base will be something on the "midtone" of what you want to achieve.
Take a look at this article , you will see some recommendations of base, light and shadow at the end of the article.

Cheers, I have got the white andrea set as well but haven't used it yet. Yes I think I'll use your same method, didn't think of doing that.

Thanks

Absolutely, with red as an example, for 90% of my Napoleonic reds, I use Vallejo Carmine Red 908 straight from the bottle as a base. To highlight, I add Sunny Skin Tone 845 and Flat Yellow 953... Usually making three progressively lighter layers. For the first shadow, I add Red 926 to the Carmine, then straight Red for the next shade
