As Napoleonics are not my usual figure, and reference for them is limited, what color choices do I have for the Polish Lancer's Horse. I am starting a 90mm Poste Militaire Polish Lancer to go along with the Trumpeter (gallery). Appreciate any help from the Napoleonic buffs out there.

thanks,
guy

Hey Anders,
I have plenty of resources on horses and colors, but not sure if the Polish Lancers used a particular color of horse as other Units did. btw does your messenger work.......mine's down

MSN seems down all over, I don't think the french could have ben fussy about the mounts towards later in the war due to shortages of mounts, though I do know trumpeters were mounted on greys etc.

Hello,
This is a picture of polish lancer. I think color of horse should be correct.

Guy,
I really think that Marcin and Robin have hit the nail on the head...bays are always a safe choice...
Good luck, can't wait to see him as he progresses...
Hope all is well

Guy,

Robin has a point - there were some shortages of horses by the end of the coalition wars. So bays, chestnuts, blacks etc were sometimes used in the same regiment: in some cases, like the 7th regiment of Hussars (this is a particularly well known light cavalry regt.), they would try for example to give all the bays to the 1st squadron, the chestnuts to the 2nd squadron, and so on... so that there was still a degree of uniformity, and of course the squadrons now could be recognized by the colour of the horses...

I hope this helps,

Johan

Hello,

Although I could not presently locate any mention of a particular colour for the Polish Lancers's horses (although surely there was some regulation, as for other Guard Cavalry units - for instance Grenadiers à Cheval and Horse Artillery rode blacks, Dragoons and Chasseurs rode chestnuts), I have checked illustrated sources and bays and chestnuts are the usual colours. Both would be safe options. Of course trumpeters would ride greys.
These regulations, as those regarding the appropriate size for horses, different for every type of cavalry, would be enforced when possible.

HTH,

Dani
