I'm a big Robert E Howard fan, and being quite new to larger scale figure painting I'm just surprised there are no (that I can find) Conan-like barbarian style figures around in 70mm. If anyone was interested in "official" figures, Conan Properties International probably wouldn't charge an arm for the name. There would be scope for other great figures too, like Kull, Bran Mark Morn and Solomon Kane, to name but a few. Seems like it could be an interesting franchise with a very large fan base...

Greetings!

This is the only one that I know of in 70-75mm. As you can see, they got quite creative in their naming/categorizing of the piece: this is a tack most manufacturers take, and will making tracking any like figures a challenge. Having said that, their [Thulsa] Doom companion piece is an absolute masterpiece!

Andrea has at least three available in their "General Series": 2 movie based (Barbarian I and II), 1 more Frazetta-ish (Cimmerian King); but these are 54mm/1/32 scale.

There is/has been considerably more selection in the garage-kit arena, but these are considerably larger--and [arguably] more expensive. For example, Moebius' offerings based on the Marvel comic depiction. Both of these kits have been discontinued, but are available while supplies last. Which brings us to the other disadvantage of garage kits: they tend to have a relatively short "shelf-life".

Hope this helps!

Hi Nik,
As Augie says, the Pegaso Arnie and James Earl Jones are pretty good - and there's several models available that compliment them. The Ninja in these photos is also Pegaso, the rest of the figures are from other kit figure mfrs.
Sorry the snaps aren't all that great, but you'll get the general idea.
Cheers

To add to augie's comments tartar miniatures have a figure called Barbarian King in 54mm is very Conan like.

On a side note you should check out Sideshows Conan painted pieces. The Sideshow Conan the Barbarian: Fury of the Beast. Its a phenomenal piece.

Crom likes this.

Crom does indeed like Sideshow, but Crom is Crom; Crom doesn't care if mere mortals are poor... ;)

Thanks guys. I've seen the Pegaso Arnie and the Knight Models Jason, and while the Andrea ones are good, I prefer 70 mm (I'm picky, I know...). The Tartar fig is almost how I would imagine Kull actually. I have Jason 'Spyda' Adams' 1/9 scale statue on its way which is what made me think about it. I just think there'd be a rich vein in this scale if anyone wanted to cover not just Conan but some of the other of R E Howard's creations.

Crickey!..... if you think, 70+ mm, is large scale! you will not be interested in these then! @ 1/6 th.. I have always thought! if you want to a do 'Conan', figure! .. do it large!.. LOL! .. 100_3268__75947_1344157745_1280_1280.jpg407201077.jpg .. Great sculpts, both of them!

Not sure I said I thought 70mm was large... 1/6 is a great scale, do my soldier bashes in that scale. Would LOVE either one of those two, but I don't know where to find them. It seems the whole underground garage kit market is a bit hard to get through to. I've seen the left one, but who's the right one from?

Edit: Duh... It has Quarantine Studios on the picture... Found more info on their Facebook page. Due out very soon it seems, might have to start saving for that one...

I always thought that one looked a bit like Joey Ramone. :playful:

I'm actually fine with what's out there in terms of statues, it was just a sort of nod towards the manufacturers that hey, there's a really nice license sitting around with some pretty hardcore fans around. If you look at all the statues out there, it's a bit odd Conan's pretty much covered in everything from 1/32 to even 1/1, but not 1/24. I'd love to see some proper sword swinging barbarians in this scale.

But yeah, that Quarantine statue is starting to give me some serious want-issues... :wideyed:

The right image is "The Barbarian" sculpted by Chris Gabrish. If you have an image of a kit but not much else then Google has a reverse image search. Just place the image into your browser on the google images search page box. It will go away and try and find sites that reference that image.

Have a look at all this Conan goodness. http://www.bucwheat.com/sl/conan/conan.htm

Would love to see a Subodai kit to go with all those Conans. Suppose a mongol archer could be just as good. :D

. . . it's a bit odd Conan's pretty much covered in everything from 1/32 to even 1/1, but not 1/24.

Give it time. . . The resurgence in 70-75mm figures is relatively recent. Unlike in the past when 75-80mm was a legitimate (albeit very much in the minority) intermediate scale between [true] 54's and the then-burgeoning 90's, this new movement is due to the hormonal increase in the size of 54's--and the fact that most of us are getting to the age where Optivisors have ceased to be an "optional" tool.

Let's hope QS decides to offer the "Brutal Barbarian" as an unfinished kit. . .

Yes, the Quarantine Conan will be available unpainted apparently. They say so in the comments field for the previous preview picture of it.
