Hi
Im confused on grendiers in the napoleonic era british army. Ok so grendiers are part of a regiment, several regiments make a battlion however how why is there battlions of grendiers. Are these special units or made up from regiment detachments?
Thanks in advamce

Simplistically each line regiment consisted of 2 battalions; home & service although both might be on service at the same time. Each battalion consisted of 10 companies; 1 light, 1 grenadier & 8 centre.
It would be possible for tactical reasons to brigade light or grenadier companies from different regiments together.
Guards & Light Infantry regiments were organised differently.

Geoff
