Captain John Lasher 1724-1806 was a Lieutenant in the British Grenadier Guards 53rd Regiment in 1759. He was a Lieutenant under Lord Sterling of the regiment in 1765. When the revolutionary war broke out Lasher joined the Continentals and in 1775 raised an independent grenadier foot company battalion in New York City. He became Colonel of the regiment and served as its captain. Captain Lasher saw that his regiment was dressed in blue coats with red and yellow facing and brass buttons . The regiment wore a tall miter cap of red cloth with the motto “salus patria excitat” adapted from the text found on the German Fusiliers pouch.
