Hi everybody:

I need advice cause i m sculpting 54 mm figures in magic sculpt and sometimes after sculpting and baking several times thin parts as arms or legs crack .
Do i need to use other putty ?...the only one i know is magic sculpt.

Thanks in advance

Juan Torres

Thanks Piotrec but i follow Magic sculpt box instruction and says i have to bake it at 150 degrees about 10 minitues, in general they stay hard but small parts crack meanwhile i shape the figures , i sculpted some figures for a friend , i sculpted them painted and when i send them they broke in travell.

Perhaps there is another kind of putty to make it harder.

cheers

Juan

Phew, I'm glad it wasn't MS!

Juan, there are a number of methods to try to prevent cracking and scorching when baking polymer clays such as SuperSculpey. One of the simplest is to use lower temperature for longer time - regardless of what the instructions say, if you bake for longer at roughly 100-110°C you should get the putty to harden fully (you can harden polymer clays in boiling water, which of course will be at or slightly below 100°C).

For accurate baking it's worth investing in an oven thermometer to check temperatures as the dials on most ovens will not give reliable temperatures, apparently they can be as much as 30° off!

Safety note: I would advise you not to bake any polymer clay in an oven you also cook in.

By the way - i bake magicsculp to speed up my work. 100 degrees for 10 mins no probs, you can move straight onto next stage. Before that i had to wait overnight!

Surface goes a bit flaky if you leave it longer though...
