George Armstrong Custer as he appeared at Gettysburg, sculpted by Terry Jones. A very gaudy uniform of black velvet. General Meade said he looked like a circus clown. Approximately 1/6 scale, painted in artist’s oils over enamels. There are plenty of photographs of Custer wearing this uniform.

Hi Len

Good to see what you’ve been working on , definitely a instantly recognised subject , he certainly cut a dashing figure , didn’t realise the uniform was black velvet so happy to learn something

I like the way you’ve painted the hair , you’ve had a challenge with the uniform colour but it works well

Thanks for sharing

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Beautifully finished piece, velvet who'd have thought he was such a dandy! Handled really well though.

Cheers Simon

It is said that Custer is the most photographed soldier from the Civil War. He wore a number of different uniforms and variations of this uniform. When he arrived on the field at Gettysburg he was described as wearing a black velvet suit with matching jacket and trousers, trimmed in gold, with a sky blue sailor’s shirt and bright red scarf. A photo of him in the uniform and a photo of a Micheal Gnatek painting of Custer.

Was Mr Custer related to Marshall Murat by any chance, they seem to have shared a love of flamboyant costume!

Cheers Simon
